The Basic facts surrounding Immigrant Parent-Child Separation Debate:
- The Trump administration did not create separation policy. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals did.
- The Trump administration did push a zero-tolerance policy on border crossing, treating all those who enter the country illegally as criminals.
- The Trump administration does not have the executive authority to unilaterally change law, as ruled by the Ninth Circuit.
- The policy should be changed, and should never have been discussed as a deterrent.
The Left argues that policy must change with regard to family separation at the border. The same bunch that argued in 2014 that it was utterly inhumane to keep children locked up with their illegal immigrant parents, and sued to have that policy changed.
The Trump administration argues that “zero tolerance” at the border was good policy, and that family separation was merely a byproduct of the legal workings of the system; the administration also argued, correctly that they didn’t have the legal authority to unilaterally overrule Ninth Circuit rulings on the Flores settlement. They are now arguing that Trump can unilaterally change policy through executive action.
Democrats called the separation policy Nazi-esque (could these people please just read a book), all the while rejecting a legislative fix in order to “keep the focus” on President Trump, as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said.
Know your history…
In fiscal year 2013, under the Barack Obama administration, the HHS Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) had as many as 25,000 unaccompanied children in its care across 80 shelters, according to a July 2014 article in Mother Jones.
For the Democrats, it was always about the agenda, they could care less about the children…
When Trump signed the executive order, you would think Democrats would be overjoyed – after all, kids would now be able to stay with their parents?Instead, Democrats immediately suggested that holding children together with parents was brutal and evil. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) told CNN that Trump’s new policy – i.e. Obama’s old policy – “could lead to family internment camps.” The Left didn’t care about separation, because when the separation is rectified, that too is awful. All those on the Left really want is the full release of all illegal immigrants with children. The agenda is just to release everyone. That’s why Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was willing to allow the separation policy to continue rather than work with Republicans in Congress to fix it.
What’s really going on down there?
CNN host Brooke Baldwin had border patrol agent and National Border Patrol Council spokesman Chris Cabrera on her show to answer for the way border patrol agents were treating small children who were separated from their families. He said, “I don’t think everybody understands what’s happening down here. You know, a lot of these kids that are coming here, and put through terrible, terrible situations by their parents; they are brought over in extremely dangerous conditions, in extremely dangerous terrain, and all this can be avoided if they just go through the port of entry. There would be no crime committed by them and they wouldn’t get separated. Why they don’t do this is beyond me. As we all know, when you get arrested, you don’t get to stay with your family. When you see a 12-year-old girl with a Plan B pill, or their parents put her on birth control because they know getting violated is part of the journey, that’s just a terrible way to live. When you see a 4-year-old girl traveling completely alone with just her parents’ phone number written across her shirt. I mean, come on now, something needs to be done. We had a 9-year-old boy last year have heat stroke in front of us and die with no family around, and that’s because we’re allowing people to take advantage of this system. I can tell you with absolute certainty they’re being treated humanely. Most of our agents are parents. I’ve seen guys, and I’ve done it myself, you give your last bottle of water to a kid, you’ll take a toy out of your car to give to one of these kids because you know the situation they’re in. Agents are very sympathetic. We’re human, we’re fathers, we have families. We do a lot for the communities here, whether or not a camera is involved. Our agents are very involved. And nobody saves more lives along the southwestern border than the U.S. Border patrol.”
An Executive Order to shut everyone up?
Trump can’t end the separation of parents at the border without violating existing law. Ironically, the separation policy began thanks to an Obama-era policy of keeping children together with parents – and the Ninth Circuit ruled that violated the Flores agreement and was inhumane. So it’s inhumane to keep kids with parents, and it’s inhumane to separate kids from parents.
So, the Executive Order will be vacated, a Trump win, and the Immigration Law will revert back to the Obama era, becoming the Democrat’s problem.
In the last three months, illegal immigration on the southern border exceeded 50,000 people each month. Since this time last year, there has been a 325 percent increase in unaccompanied alien children and a 435 percent increase in family units entering the country illegally. Over the last 10 years, there has been a 1,700 percent increase in asylum claims, resulting in asylum backlog of 600,000 cases. Since 2013, the United States has admitted more than half a million illegal immigrant minors and family units from Central America, most of whom today are at large in the United States. The United States is preparing to shelter as many as 20,000 migrant children on four American military bases, a Pentagon spokesman said on Thursday, as federal officials struggled to carry out President Trump’s order to keep immigrant families together after they are apprehended at the border.
Well played everyone.
