False Cape State Park, located in Virginia Beach, named Austin Monnett as the new park manager. He started his official role on January 25 after serving as assistant state park manager at Claytor Lake for two years.
Monnett grew up in southeast Kentucky rock climbing, kayaking and hiking in the Red River Gorge. After graduating from the University of Kentucky in 2015, he moved to California to teach environmental science and outdoor recreation skills to middle school students.
He then moved back to Kentucky and started his career in state parks as a seasonal interpreter at Natural Bridge Resort State Park. He also worked at Cayo Costa State Park in Florida before coming to Virginia in 2018 to accept the position of assistant manager at Chippokes State Park, and then in 2021 accepted the same position at Claytor Lake.
While Monnett is new to False Cape, he is not new to working in state parks and has some ideas that he wants to implement at the park.
“Because False Cape is only accessible via foot, bike, tram tour or boat, we have to get creative when connecting with the public,” said Monnett. “I’m hoping to expand on the many relationships with community partners that staff have already created with new plans to design unique programs and outreach opportunities.”
False Cape is a one-of-a-kind Virginia State Park and Monnett knows that while each day will present a different challenge, he is ready to adapt in his new environment.
“In my many years in parks, I’ve never had two identical days, and the fact that each day will present something new is exciting,” said Monnett. “I’ve spent sunrises helping baby sea turtles make it out to the sea, and sunsets helping kids start their first campfire. I am eager to experience False Cape, especially with my family.”
Monnett will be living at the park with his wife Bailey, and daughter Charlotte, who are both excited about moving back to the East Coast and experiencing the beauty, serenity and everything amazing that False Cape has to offer.
