This week, a citizen emailed the Mirror and provided photographs of a beach tent and equipment that were left out all night. The Mirror contacted Town Manager Hozey and asked about the issue:
Yes, we still have a rule about prohibiting unattended property on the beach. We have signage at each beach entrance about this. Our beach attendants try to note when property is left unattended, and then they mark them with a bright yellow sticker to notify the owners (see attached). Then as staffing will allow, we collect up this property and remove it. Again, we don’t have the staff to do this every day, but we’ll do it as often as we can. This is a problem every year, and unfortunately, we get a new batch of visitors in each week, so keeping the public educated is difficult. It usually takes a month or so into the summer season before the word circulates on the street that property left unattended can be taken.

As summer approaches and our beach becomes increasingly crowded, it’s essential to remember the importance of beach etiquette. By following a few simple guidelines, you can ensure that everyone has an enjoyable and stress-free experience at the beach.
- Respect others’ space: When setting up your beach umbrella or towel, be mindful of the space around you. Leave enough room for others to comfortably pass by and avoid encroaching on other beachgoers’ areas.
- Don’t leave your stuff. When the beach day is over, pack up and take it home.
- Keep noise levels down: While it’s okay to enjoy music or engage in conversation, be considerate of those around you. Keep your music at a reasonable volume and avoid shouting or using excessive profanity.
- Clean up after yourself: Always dispose of your trash properly. Bring a bag to collect your waste and dispose of it in designated bins or take it with you when you leave. This includes cigarette butts, which can be harmful to marine life.
- Be cautious with beach activities: If you’re playing beach games like frisbee or volleyball, be aware of your surroundings. Avoid throwing or kicking sand, as it can easily get into other people’s eyes or belongings.
- Respect wildlife: If you encounter marine life or other animals on the beach, observe them from a distance. Do not feed, chase, or harass them, as this can be harmful to their well-being and is often illegal.
- Follow beach rules and regulations: Pay attention to posted signs regarding swimming conditions, designated areas for surfing or fishing, and any other local regulations. Adhering to these rules helps maintain a safe and orderly beach environment for everyone.
By practicing good beach etiquette, you contribute to a positive and enjoyable atmosphere for all beachgoers. Remember, the beach is a shared space, and it’s up to each individual to do their part in keeping it clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone.
“…excessive profanity”…???? Scotiagirl would like to know how much profanity is deemed acceptable when sharing the beach.
And there is the QUESTION OF THE HOUR!
AMEN
Someone’s been leaving dog turds on the Beach too,
at least I hope they’re dog turds…
Has Joe Biden been there recently?
You like to talk a lot about Joe Biden and San Francisco.
It’s America, dude!
Ever been there?
In America, we have something called freedom of speech and freedom of expression, something the Cape Charles Mirror takes seriously.
Paul thinks he is a celebrity after the “editor” of this “newspaper” gave Paul a megaphone of sorts, and a license to post non sensical commentary on this site non stop. The sad part is Paul doesn’t realize the “editor” is making fun of him. Kind of like the beginning of American Idol when the freaks audition.
Editor’s Note: When cretons like this try to seem clever is really the AI Freaks edition. This loser complains like a petulant child yet can’t pull himself away. Nice use of quotes muttonhead. Now, this is how you really make fun of someone.
Pedro, dude, speaking as an American citizen who was actually born here, if you don’t like freedom of speech, and you obviously cannot handle freedom of speech, then why on earth did you bother to leave whatever third-world ****hole you were in to come here?
So you can strip us of our rights and make America into the same type of third-world ****hole you were in before you got here, so you will feel more comfortable, given you can’t handle people like the “editor” of the CCM being free to run this publication he owns as he chooses to do without having to get permission first from people like yourself who can’t handle freedom and wish to suppress it?
And I hardly think I am a “celebrity” and actually do not wish to be one.
I am nothing more than a COMMON American citizen and am content with that, not needing the notoriety you seem to crave in here and have gained.
I talk about Joe Biden as an AMERICAN CITIZEN because he is a public figure and it is my right to do so, and the few times I do talk about San Francisco, which again is my right to do so, it is to remark about how the DEMOCRATS have turned a once-nice and pleasant city into a third-world ****hole, and it is what they will do to all of America if left unchecked.
That, of course, is an opinion I am entitled to have as an American citizen and as a combat veteran who shed blood defending that right!
Curious why what I post seems to upset you so, or concerns you in any way.
Are you a DEMOCRAT and card-carrying Joe Biden supporter?
If so, I’ll organize some prayer sessions where people concerned about your mental well-being will pray for your recovery.
I think that was the mayor.
It is amazing to me that people do not know better!
It’s America!
It’s chock-a-block with people who don’t know better and really don’t care about knowing better, because that is for other people, not them.
You know – LAND OF THE FREE, which means they can do anything they want and nobody can stop them from doing what they want, because it is the land of the free, which means free of any and all respo0nhsibility for themselves, and fornicate all those who think different, because those who think different want to take their freedom to do what they want away from them, which violates their Constitutional right to be free to do whatever they want when they want.
Sad.
I call dibs on all unattended property. What was yours is now mine. See you there around 9.
I have a question.
I’m usually on the beach at 4am.
If I see unattended property on the beach that was left there the day before. Can I take it? Or would I be arrested by Barney Fife for taking abandoned property?
How about doing your F#*@n job town manager!
Take the damn property or hire someone to do the damn job!
There is such a thing as town ordinances that can be addressed for issues like this.
Every beach that I know of has such ordinances.
This town is so stupid. No town I know of put stickers on abandoned property on the beach!
If the town manager is so damn smart he could have checked with other localities such as Rehoboth Beach, Ocean City, Virginia Beach on how they address this problem.
It sounds like to me this town manager is just LAZY!
