Amazon, Apple, and Google have all acted to shut Parler down supposedly because it hosts calls for violence, but a simple search of Twitter shows that it regularly allows such calls itself.
Twitter hosts a #KillTrump hashtag. One of these tweets reads “#ArrestTrump not enough #KillTrump.” And this isn’t new, back in June the hashtag #AssassinateTrump was bouncing around the website with gems like “Someone take this clown out NOW.”
That tweet is still up.
And while Trump’s alleged calls for violence, in fact he explicitly called for peaceful protest, got him banned, the Ayatollah Khamenei tweeted this in November, “. . . Palestine will be free, while the fake Zionist regime will perish. There’s no doubt about this.”
Twitter has the right to police the speech on its platform, but the rules must apply equally to everyone if they claim to be a neutral platform and not a publisher.
Should we worry about a private firm censoring the president of the United States and preventing him from effectively communicating with citizens over a chosen medium of universal reach.
The suppression of free speech by Big Tech monopolies seems to be the new modus operandi. Twitter banning President Trump is proof Jack Dorsey lied at every Congressional hearing he testified at.
Michelle Obama took the lead in urging the permanent ban on Trump, which Twitter did. Biden press aide Bill Russo wants Facebook to censor “misleading” information.
The expulsion from the cloud of Twitter competitor Parler by Twitter, Facebook, Apple, and Google, is intended to benefit the Left and penalize the Right.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel labeled Twitter’s permanent ban of Trump “problematic” and that President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of Mexico criticized Facebook’s blocking of the outgoing U.S. president, and that the Portuguese analyst Bruno Macaes thinks it’s “time to start a debate in Europe whether we want to stay tightly connected to a US internet where repression of speech will keep growing.”
“Yesterday,” wrote the American Conservative’s Rod Dreher late last week, “I predicted that the Left and the liberal Establishment would use the Beer Belly Putsch as an opportunity to begin to implement the rudiments of a social credit system, and to otherwise marginalize and suppress right-of-center discourse and people. Well, here we go.” The reference is to China’s system of surveillance and supervision, which uses consumer data, facial recognition, artificial intelligence, and GPS tracking to identify regime critics and deny them access to everything from airline seats to bank credit.
This is not a Black Mirror episode. This is America now.
Big Tech suppression of speech, at one party’s urging but not government order, technically doesn’t violate the First Amendment. But, as CNN commentator Mary Katharine Ham tweeted, “It feels creepy and authoritarian.”
MJM says
The freedom of speech was illegally stolen from the President of The Unted States. This was not a difference of opinion. That freedom may be the most important tool that The President has. Which means these techies ( in my opinion ) took everything from The President. They have publicly demonstrated that they believe they are more powerful than The President, and they destroyed some of the ability of his office to function. Defiance of Presidential Authority should not be ignored. I believe the penalty should fit this premeditated crime. Take everything from the presidents of these social media companies. Every single penny they each have on a personal basis and give them serious federal time. Close their accounts. Take their money and their houses and throw them in the street. Alow their company to continue to work, but make them start completely over and work by the rules the rest of us live by. Don’t forget to include Bezos in that. He doesn’t get a pass. While I certainly understand that this penalty could never be allowed by law, my point is the times and laws need to change. Taking away someone’s constitutional right is a whole new ball game. Doing it to The President is an insurrection.
Sorin Varzaru says
“Taking away someone’s constitutional right is a whole new ball game. Doing it to The President is an insurrection”
I find it amazing how a lot of conservatives, despite their professed love of the constitution seem to be unable to comprehend the basic notion that 1st amendment prohibits the government from making laws that restrict the freedom of speech. It has nothing to do with what a private entity does on their own turf. If you are in my yard you either observe the rules I established or I kick you out. It’s really not that difficult to understand.
Plus, even the 1st amendment doesn’t protect incitement to violence.
Note: Not a 1st Amendment issue, “Big Tech suppression of speech, at one party’s urging but not government order, technically doesn’t violate the First Amendment. But, as CNN commentator Mary Katharine Ham tweeted, ‘It feels creepy and authoritarian.'”
MJM says
You have been absent from participating for a while Sorin. Good to see you back. I do not profess to be a constitutional lawyer, so my words I am sure are not perfect. I did however make it clear that I know my suggested penalty would not be allowed by law, which means I’m not trying to enforce my “interpretation”. My point is that a public media corp. that allows folks a platform should not at all be allowed to single out The President of The United States and silence him, while allowing others to say much worse things. If that is their purpose then I believe they should be severely punished. It’s called respect for the office, and for what I think should be a law. This media does lack depth and invites misunderstandngs easily unless one writes forever. Additionally, if you are inferring that The President broke their rules by inciting violence, please quote me his words where he did that. I have yet to see or hear his words that are anywhere near as bad as what so many others are still alowed to use to this day, and they are not silenced. I have not seen or read a single speech by President Trump that called for violence. The techies most definitely did single him out in an unfair and unbalanced way of enforcing their policy. Then when you follow this up with the info The Washington Post gave us that the Chief of The Capitol Police begged Pelosi for backup 5 or 6 times, we have insight into how and why this riot actually started. Sunday’s paper. She wouldn’t allow them to get help, or wear riot gear or set up what she considered unnecessary perimieters. Bus and truck lines. Fences. The stuff they set up stupidly for Biden’s power play after they brought in 25K troops. That’s why we had a riot. And the press won’t even hardly touch the story. He (chief) resigned or was fired, depends on who you listen to, immediately after. Pelosi deliberately kicked Trump, and all The Capitol Police in the butt on his way out. She used The Capitol Building , The Police, and all of our legislators as pawns to paint a very risky and ugly power move.

I make the distinction between protected speech (i.e. GOVERNMENT cannot ban speech) and the ability of a private entity to kick undesirables from their property/platform. How would you like it if the government regulated who you can allow or not allow on your website? If the democrats proposed such a law, you’d be screaming bloody murder

Hi, Sorin, so nice to see you posting.
You always have so much that is so interesting to think about.
You’re probably used to oress censorship over in the old country, so perhaps that colors your perspective of FACEBOOK and Mark Zuckerberg acting as the MINISTRY OF TRUTH here in America, which is now a socialist democracy, by the way, by executive decree of Joe Biden yesterday.
We now have a new constitution and a new history, as well, by executive decree, one which you would probably like because it blames everything wrong in the world on straight white American men.
Connie Parks says
Ya’ll don’t forget the hate this, Sorin Varzaru , spread on here over the last few years as you engage him today. He was advocating Christians lick door knobs when the china flu started. He is a foreigner with socialist/communist views. Treat him accordingly.
MJM says
Well, you say you make the distinction Sorin, but I don”t see you making it. You voice an opinion but don’t back up the opinion with proof or a valid reason. Something apparently was said somewhere by President Trump that you think makes him an undesirable participant on these social media platforms. I, and apparently others here, disagree. So I asked you to make your case and tell us when and where he spoke, and what he said that makes him an undesirable, which then forces him to be removed. You have made comments but not adressed the issue with facts at all. Please state your case or appear to be without one, and simply angry over nothing and revelling in destruction of the office of The President with the manipulation of public opinion by the false claims of these media people. In the meantime, President Trump’s replacement, President Biden, has already shown his disrespect for The American People by cancelling The Keystone Pipeline. Jay C. Ford handed Uncle Joe the pen and tens of thousands of good union jobs ended. How is the destruction of jobs a good idea in a socialist or capitalist economy ? Over $80 million in annual tax revenues for Montana were cancelled. I could sure use some cash like that. The governor is saying he sure could. You know, roads, schools, heat bills. What agenda was assisted by putting Uncle Joe in offic with lies and starting these job cancellations ? “The Deal” President Trump made with Canada to transport Canadian oil made sure only american steel was used. Our new President is making it harder for America to be energy independent, and thrown back into the turmoil of the middle east oil market. That market is heavily influenced by bombs and mines and necessitates our soldiers being shipped overseas and losing their lives. How is that good for our soldiers and their families ? Mark Zuckerturd thinks he should be allowed to lie to the public and falsely influence public opinion, which I believe is what you are supporting by not factually stating what you believe are President Trump’s disqualifying words. I told you prior I am not a constitutional attorney, but I certainly do know how to ask the relevant question for the pertinent information. Canada loved the pipeline idea and seriously dislike Biden already. Business makes the world go round. If not it gets more violent and we shift towards a wartime economy. Americans are upset over the loss of jobs and the price at the pump and the energy market moving higher in just a few days and we are all wondering why President Biden should get a pass from social media and the press when his pen and ignorant comments are certainly more harmful to The American way of life, and Canada’s, than what President Trump’s words were.
Sorin Varzaru says
Facebook, twitter and … Wayne (for example) shouldn’t need any reason to kick anyone from their platform. I would not let Trump in my house because he disgusts me and I would not expect anyone to ask me.to explain why. Their mistake was that they tried to justify their action. They should have said, we’re kicking trump off because we don’t want him to post his garbage on our site.
As far as the pipeline, my guess is that Biden is a bit more concerned about the environment then the monetary benefits. I don’t know enough about the topic to have an opinion.
MJM says
Well you certainly aren’t a constitutional scholar either. It looks to me like you are waffling on your opinion, and won’t face the simple, direct challenge. You may not expect anyone to ask you why to explain your actions, well it’s a brave new world and say hello to me and everyone else in here that wonders how and why you could be trying to defend this. President Trump never did utter any words that told people to riot and we all know it. People are responsible for their own actions. Yet Facebook and Twitter continue to allow Farrakhan and Ayatollah Khomeini voice pure hate all the time. Double standards like this have no place here. You know that the job of the media platforms is to provide access for all equally unless they break certain rules and now you say they should be allowed to simply say nothing, or declare Trump’s words garbage and delete him. WHAT ? Applying that attitude or rule to all businesses would certainly create chaos all throughout the land. So then it’s okay for you and your family to go to a restaurant and for them to let everyone in your party in but you, and say they don’t want you in because your shirt is ugly, or your nose looke like a garbage can ? That works for you ? This promotes President Biden’s unity ? Then again, perhaps that is what you espouse. That may be the policy in your home, but I bet the conversations of everyone agreeing with each other all the time must be quite boring. Or I should, say agreeing with you. Now we are seeing/hearing that Twitter is being sued for monumental amounts of child porn in their platform, but they will I guess still remain in your eyes that they have better control of themselves than Trump? As far as the pipeline goes, as President Biden would say “c’mon man. Gimme a break”. With all the EPA and Native American land rites dilemmas that were faced, the environment is not the question. Rail cars carrying the oil is much less efficient, more expensive and environmentally dangerous. The democrats have become a band of narcissists that tell half truths, ignore the wants and needs of their constituents, and bend to the desires of globalists who want Saudi Arabia to be able to sell their oil while we put American steelworkers and mills out of work, while driving up the cost of our oil and gas. More than 10,000 jobs lost here and we are supposed to believe this is for the good of the people ? All this while the administration abuses 25K soldiers in D.C. and really should just let them go home when Pelosi caused the riot by allowing no defense. As long as I’m on a roll and bashing our new President, I’m going to the immigrant crisis. Biden has opened the border and stopped sending the lawbreakers back. Felony criminals caught coming across the border and already in jail are being ordered to be let loose prior to trial or deporting. Loose into American neighborhoods to raise havoc. All deportations are ordered ceased. The coyotes are bringing immigrants by the truckload and one thing I know is that the coyotes are not supplying them with masks and there will be a lot more covid cases coming across the border into towns that are already overrun with covid19. Their hospitals are screaming for help. Just how is that going to promote unity ? I’m sure confused as to why Trump’s words and policies are garbage and while Biden’s dangerous and inhumane actions in his 1st week are laudable.
Sorin Varzaru says
“So then it’s okay for you and your family to go to a restaurant and for them to let everyone in your party in but you, and say they don’t want you in because your shirt is ugly, or your nose looke like a garbage can ?”
Didn’t the conservatives celebrate the SCOTUS decision to allow the religious cake bakers to deny service to gay couples? Conversely you should support the right of twitter to refuse to allow trump on their platform based on their belief that trump is scum. No?
By the way, I do believe twitter made a tactical mistake when they banned trump. It enabled him and his supporters to turn him into a “martyr”. So, while I support their right to ban Trump or anyone else, selectively banning people based on whims or political winds was in my opinion lame.
Ray Otton says

Sadly, he produced this EO for one reason only. To assuage the demands of Left Wing environmentalists, or as we like to call them, useful idiots. ( Don’t get made at me, Lenin used the term to describe the intellectual elites he used to advance communist ideology, and then had them “disappeared”.)
Know how we know?
The oil isn’t going to stop flowing out of the ground. It’s going to come south on trucks and trains, both of which are less safe methods of transport AND less environmentally friendly. Or it will flow west and end up in China.
However, you are on something with your comment about the financial end of it.
Turns out, most of the rail lines that will move the oil are owned by the Berkshire/Hathaway conglomerate. The head guy being………….Warren Buffet.
Not hard to connect the dots from Biden*, to Buffet, to China and back to Biden*.

I thought you and I were going to avoid these kind of comments.

Could not help myself… 🙂 The conspiracy part is the suggested causality in your post between biden and the interest of w buffet.
Any change to a policy will create some winners and losers. That doesn’t mean automatically that the policy makers is in cahoots with the winner and hates the loser, nor does it mean that the reason for the policy was to benefit the winner.
All of that being said, based on my quick internet searches, it does seem like the pipes are the best way to transport crude and this is one of those emotional decisions like the current trend against nuclear plants. I never agreed with that either.
Ray Otton says

C’mon man.
The FACT is, Buffett gives extensively to Democrat causes and candidates. He’s hosted a number of fundraisers for recent presidential candidates most of whom have stated their intent to shut down the Keystone pipeline during the debates.
B-H owns the Northern Santa Fe railroad which changes $30 barrel to ship crude oil vs the pipeline’s $10 per barrel so he stands to lose about 2$ billion A YEAR if the pipeline stays open.
NOW do you see some causality?

Not sure what you were pointing out in your links, that WB votes democrat? That’s not a surprise. My point was that you are assuming biden killed the pipeline for WB. I find that incredibly difficult to believe for a few reasons. first, the numbers don’t seem to add up, wb could make more money selling them the thinner for the crude. 2nd, wb supported the pipeline. 3rd, I’m not seeing biden doing something like this.
and that’s what’s in was referring to when I said we’re all seeing what we want to see. I have bias against Trump and while I don’t particularly like biden, I probably have bias for him.
Ray Otton says
“Not sure what you were pointing out in your links, that WB votes democrat?”
Yes and pertinent to my point.
You can’t separate political leanings from finance when you get to that level of money.
It’s a Gordian knot of money, power and influence where the rich get richer and those of us who don’t own railroads end up paying more at the pump because the railroad owner can influence the regime to his benefit.
In fact, the more I think about it, I would have thought you’d have taken the other side in this discussion, being an anti-corporation kind of guy.
But whatev, at least we didn’t end up calling each other names, a staple here at the CCM.
Ray Otton says
l’d like to further strengthen my point by reporting on a tangentially related news item –
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen received more than $800,000 in speaking fees ( legal bribes) from the hedge fund Citadel which is entangled in the saga over stock trades for video game retailer GameStop.
You see, Citadel is invested heavily in Melvin Capital, the hedge fund that may be on the brink of bankruptcy this week due to a surge in GameStop share prices.
Gordian knots everywhere.
So, how long until we hear about a Melvin Capital bailout from the first female treasury secretary who is also the biggest crook to date appointed by the Biden* regime?
Nothing new, really, it’s been going on since forever, but at least we’ve turned over the rock.
I dare say, there may be enough corruption exposed to unite the regular folks, left, center and right.
Sorin Varzaru says
“In fact, the more I think about it, I would have thought you’d have taken the other side in this discussion, being an anti-corporation kind of guy.

Not sure how you concluded I am anti-corporations. I own stock in some of them and while it is a flawed system that is open for abuse and manipulation, I have yet to hear about a better one.
What irks me about a lot of posts on both the left and right side is the apparent difficulty for most people to differentiate between causality and correlation.
So when you point out that an action biden took seems to benefit warren, you found a correlation. Demonstrating a causality requires more then finding a correlation.
Additionally, I am tempted to give the benefit of doubt to a guy that pledged 99% of his wealth to charity (and who already donated 34 billion).
Ray Otton says
1 – Causality and correlation? Well, identifying that the reasoning behind an argument is flawed does not necessarily imply that the resulting conclusion is false…………….Or…………….If it quacks like a duck, it’s a duck.
So, if a mega donor to a political party benefits financially from the actions that party takes when in power, especially those actions that are counter to the benefit of the little guy, he’s a great big duck. Correlation or causation be damned.
The thing is, as George Carlin famously said when referring to the oligarchs, it’s a big party but you ain’t invited.
2 – I’m not going to bother going back through all your posts but I ( and other posters ) would be willing to bet you have made anti-corporate comments over the years.
It’s baked into socialist ideology, the idea that private corporations are the root of all evil.
3 – Since you’re giving the benefit of the doubt to big time charity givers how about a nod to Mr. Donald J. Trump, who donated his presidential salary to a different organization every quarter for the four years he held office?
Sorin Varzaru says
“So, if a mega donor to a political party benefits financially from the actions that party takes when in power, especially those actions that are counter to the benefit of the little guy, he’s a great big duck. Correlation or causation be damned.”
Here is an example that shows how ignoring the difference between the two leads to false conclusions. If one looks at ice cream sales vs. murder rates per week, you can see a correlation. Ice cream sales and murder rates go up and down together. It would be silly (and wrong) to infer a causation between the two. The reality is that they are both affected by how hot it is outside.
“It’s baked into socialist ideology, the idea that private corporations are the root of all evil.”
Ray, i mentioned this multiple times. I am not a socialist , I don’t support socialism using the definition used in the eastern block, and I will vote against it should that ever be proposed. You are obviously an intelligent person so you MUST understand the difference between what was in Romania/Russia and France or Sweden. While both sides use the word socialism, there is no much similarly.
Unlike you, I grew up in comunism/socialism and I have direct experience with that extreme ideology. After moving to US I experienced the polar opposite. It’s my conclusion after expering both that extremes are bad. So, it support the capitalist system, because it’s the “lesser evil”, clearly from an economy standpoint, eastern europe style socialism/communism doesn’t work. But I support moderating the ill effects of “wild west” capitalism with regulation, taxes and social programs.
You must be capable of understanding that there are shades of grey between black and white.
3 – Since you’re giving the benefit of the doubt to big time charity givers how about a nod to Mr. Donald J. Trump, who donated his presidential salary to a different organization every quarter for the four years he held office?
And then spend hundreds of millions on his golf trips? WB donated 35 BILLION. And he pledge donating 95% of his wealth. How much did trump donate?
Ray Otton says
“Ray, i mentioned this multiple times. I am not a socialist”
That is news to the audience here at CCP.
I can recall epic word battles between you, tokenny, and the Potted Plante over the evils of socialism. In fact, the viciousness of those posts led me to back off contributing here.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“you MUST understand the difference between what was in Romania/Russia and France or Sweden. While both sides use the word socialism, there is no much similarly.”
The old canard that there’s a difference between Socialism and Democratic Socialism. I have to clear this up again? I’ll give Leftists one thing, they are relentless in their ideological pursuits.
A couple of outstanding examples of the failures of “Democratic Socialism” in action; Stalin and Chavez.
The secret the Democratic Socialists like to hide is they were both initially Democratic Socialists.
However, when they ran into obstacles they intensified their efforts rather than make a course correction.
– When Stalin became an atheist after reading Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species,” he didn’t set out to murder 20 million people, yet, he did.
– When Ukrainians resisted the forced collectivization of agriculture, Stalin’s agents seized their crops and created a famine that claimed 4 million lives.
– When some of Stalin’s comrades said the cost of socialism was too high, he killed them too.
– Chávez wanted to soak the Venezuelan rich, but he did not want to starve the poor, yet he turned South America’s richest country into its poorest.
The problem is that democratic socialism does not work. All of socialism goes against entrepreneurial and familial instincts. People work harder when they and their families profit by it and people work smarter when they can run with creative ideas rather than shuffle through a bureaucracy.
Once in power socialists soon see their locomotive stalling. What happens then?
Historically, a few democratic socialists gave in and chose compromise over killing ( The Scandinavian countries), however, overwhelmingly, the choice has been to sacrifice the democracy part in the belief that a little more coal will get the train moving again. Then eventually, a lot more coal.
Another little known fact, Marx mocked democratic socialists and developed what he called “scientific socialism.”
In 1873 he called himself “a true admirer” of Darwin and saw socialist revolution as a survival of the fittest, with the corpses of those formerly in charge left in the dust. Tyranny, pure and simple.
Was it inevitable? Yes.
When revolutions leave a power vacuum, the most ruthless fill it.
What Edmund Burke said about the French Revolution has been true of every socialist upheaval: “In the groves of their academy, at the end of every vista, you see nothing but the gallows.”
And now, we are beginning to experience the same thing right here in the halls for freedom.
For 4 years, the Left has verbally and physically attacked Trump supporters with nary a word from the media nor Democrat leadership. ( Dare I say, actually with encouragement)
And now they’re in power, many (D) politicians and media pundits are labeling all 75 million Trump supporters white supremacist( even the black and brown ones FFS), insurrectionists and calling for them to be deprogrammed.
That’s not going to play well in Peoria and everything that comes next is due to the headlong rush of the Democrat party’s embracing Socialism.
Sorin Varzaru says
“People work harder when they and their families profit by it and people work smarter when they can run with creative ideas rather than shuffle through a bureaucracy.”
I agree. I am not suggesting we change that. Currently the government in US (at various levels) provides at (the taxpayer expense) police, fire depts, healthcare to the elderly/vets/handicapped, education up to college, etc. I would like (and voted for) a more progressive tax rate funding a national healthcare program for all, college for those who want to study (and deserve it), mental health programs for those who need it and a few other things. Which one of these make me a communist?

CDA 230 also offers its legal shield to bloggers who act as intermediaries by hosting comments on their blogs. Under the law, bloggers are not liable for comments left by readers, the work of guest bloggers, tips sent via email, or information received through RSS feeds. This legal protection can still hold even if a blogger is aware of the objectionable content or makes editorial judgments.
Simple enough if you use more than your head. Try your brain.
When did you start speaking for Wayne?
Note: Actually, this dates to 1996. Stratton Oakmont, a brokerage firm, sued Prodigy Services, an internet service provider, for defamation in the 1990s. Stratton was founded by Jordan Belfort, who was convicted of securities fraud and was portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio in the Martin Scorsese film about financial excess (Wolf of Wall Street). An anonymous user wrote on Prodigy’s online message board that the brokerage had engaged in criminal and fraudulent acts. The New York Supreme Court ruled that Prodigy was “a publisher” and therefore liable because it had exercised editorial control by moderating some posts and establishing guidelines for impermissible content. If Prodigy had not done any moderation, it might have been granted free speech protections afforded to some distributors of content, like bookstores and newsstands. The Section 230 amendment was folded into the Communications Decency Act, an attempt to regulate indecent material on the internet, without much opposition or debate. A year after it was passed, the Supreme Court declared that the indecency provisions were a violation of First Amendment rights. But it left Section 230 in place. In 2019, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit affirmed a lower court’s ruling that Facebook was not liable for violent attacks coordinated and encouraged by Facebook accounts linked to Hamas. In the majority opinion, the court said Section 230 “should be construed broadly in favor of immunity.” Sites can moderate content — set their own rules for what is and what is not allowed — without being liable for everything posted by visitors.

Is that you writing comments under my name? Aren’t you clever – not really but I’ll throw you a bone. As someone here once asked you – you leave your phone # and I’ll be sure to call.
The tough guy swagger just doesn’t cut it on the internet. Maybe in the bar or dock surrounded by your friends but here …. nah
Run along

Sorry, G…..actually busy, and only stop by infrequently.
I stand by my statement…..WAYNE does NOT hide behind…..
See the difference in translation?
Then Law? Buwahahahahahahahaha, which one? The one for Leftists, or the active, aggressive prosecution visited upon Evil’s enemies?
Slip them on G…..tighten them well…….bow down before your masters……quickly, pull down your mask……lick their boots and know…..
TWANLOC.

Knowing that he isn’t even in the top 10 waters your argument down. You only thought your heard a quack, so guess what it’s not a duck.
If the decision to kill the pipeline was a plan don’t you think they just pissed off quite a few mega donors that give more money then him? This is nothing more than you and others arranging the tea leaves to support some other absurd rumor
