NASSAWADOX, Va. – A grassroots movement focused on fostering civil discourse and understanding across political divides is coming to the Eastern Shore. Braver Angels, a national nonprofit dedicated to bridging partisan gaps, will host an in-person event on Monday at the Nassawadox Fire and Rescue station.
The event, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 10239 Pine Ave., will feature a screening of the documentary Braver Angels: Reuniting America and a presentation on the organization’s approach to fostering constructive dialogue. Attendees will hear from Sharon Marshall, the Red Co-Chair of Braver Angels’ Central/Eastern Alliance, and Jodi Fisler, the Blue Co-Chair, who will introduce participants to the nonpartisan initiative.
Since its founding in 2016, Braver Angels has worked to encourage respectful conversation between individuals with differing political ideologies. Through debates, workshops, and town halls across the country, the organization aims to dispel stereotypes and cultivate mutual understanding. Those who have participated in Braver Angels programs often report transformative shifts in their perspectives and interactions with people who hold opposing views.
The free event includes a light lunch, and while donations are welcome, registration is encouraged. No physical or virtual tickets are required to attend.

Definitely a needed concept.
This is a very encouraging initiative. Political dialog has become very hateful and uncompromising. Yet when I discuss some of the current issues with friends and neighbors –there is often more agreement than disagreement.
But we have forces that appear to divide us rather than benefit from our differences in style, personal beliefs, areas of expertise, and background. Democracy is strong because it creates a structure that is strong because it leverages and values these differences. One factor that has facilitated our current scenario is cable television and and various news channels-many have a very narrow political onjective and they play to a narrow audience to protect their market. This phenomena. has evolved–there are some channels I rarely access because I know what they are going to say before they start talking. What value is that!
Yet sometimes I find an idea agree with–thats the way we all are–or at least most of us. Respect for differences, open expression of ideas, and an eagerness to continuing to learn are charac.teristics that can bring us together. We will have differences, but be able find common ground and positive directions.
