  1. I appreciate this article being posted on Face Book. My hope is that funds will be available soon to save this American and Virginia historical treasure. I have spent a great deal of time on the Eastern Shore doing genealogy research and have been going there to relax for the last 10 years. I have made some good friends there. I can not imagine the world without Tangier or the Eastern Shore. As far as I am corncerned, their history is as important if not more than Jamestown.

  2. “Tangier is the only off-shore fishing community left in America”
I’m virtually certain this isn’t true. Try looking from Mount Desert Island Maine to the Louisiana bayou to Puget Sound.

Note: You are probably correct, but it’s term off-shore that is probably the difference.

    1. The study quote is “Tangier is the only off-shore fishing community left in Virginia.” Maryland has one just north of Tangier on Smith Island, there are more in other states.

Note: Thank you for the correction.

  3. Other than the political quip at the end, I liked the objective accounting of the engineering challenges tangier island faces with sea level rise. Ten years ago, fighting climate change had bipartisan support. After the passing of Citizens United and the increased flow of special interest money into politics did striving for a clean energy future and preventing environmental damage really become a political issue. Why are we debating whether or not to preserve our children’s future? It was on John McCain’s campaign platform in 2008. The science has only become more robust, the engineering only more affordable, especially when externalities are included, and the denial more obvious. Exxon recognized this 40 years ago, as do many major corporations, most governments, and the US military. To see a bipartisan effort on Tangier, recognizing the importance of historical preservation, demonstrating human engineering ingenuity, and accepting the science of the human effect on climate change would be timely, to say the least. The brightest future scenario includes cooperation, science, engineering, and long term sustainability; divisiveness and denial, not so much. What would it hurt to have a billion dollar contest for the best demonstration project to save Tangier? Rather than some shady arms sales and tax breaks to who knows where.

  4. Wayne, author Tom Horton has asked me to tell you what ‘a very good piece’ this article is. Congratulations !

Note: Thanks so much, I really appreciate it.
