CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Yacht Club (CCYC) hosted an expanded celebration on Saturday, August 2, to honor the U.S. Coast Guard, inviting the entire community to join in recognizing the service of the men and women stationed at Coast Guard Station Cape Charles.
The event, held just days before the Coast Guard’s 234th birthday on August 4, began at 9 a.m. at the old Ferry Dock property on the south side of Mason Avenue. Several Coast Guard surface and air assets were on display, including a cutter that the public was able to tour. A Search and Rescue helicopter also conducted a live demonstration in the harbor, showcasing the critical lifesaving missions the service performs daily.
Station Cape Charles, located on the town’s waterfront, plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of both commercial and recreational mariners in the busy waters of the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding areas. The station’s missions include search and rescue operations, law enforcement, environmental protection, and the maintenance of navigational aids.

CCYC, which traditionally hosts a reception for Coast Guard members and their families each year, expanded the event this year to allow more residents and visitors to participate. While the Coast Guard showcased multiple operational assets, organizers noted that their availability was subject to change if the units were called into service.
Following the morning activities, CCYC provided lunch for Coast Guard personnel and their families. Community members in attendance had the opportunity to personally thank the service members who support the town’s maritime safety.
