CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Town Council has approved a Conditional Use Permit for the Cape Charles Rosenwald School Restoration Initiative, clearing the way for a series of interpretive signs designed to tell the history of the former Cape Charles Elementary School and the Rosenwald School Building Program.
The comprehensive sign plan includes six freestanding interpretive kiosk signs and one freestanding historical marker at the Impact Center site.
Three of the interpretive signs will measure 36 inches by 24 inches, while another three will measure 60 inches by 36 inches. The historical marker will measure 36 inches by 48 inches.
The signs are intended to provide visitors with information about the history of the Impact Center, the Rosenwald School Building Program and the Cape Charles Elementary School community that once occupied the building.
The project is part of an ongoing effort to preserve the history of the former school and make that history accessible to residents and visitors.
Rosenwald schools played an important role in African American education during the era of segregation. Thousands of school buildings were constructed across the South through a program associated with educator and civil rights leader Booker T. Washington and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald. The Cape Charles property is part of that broader educational history.
The new interpretive displays will allow visitors to explore both the local story of the school and its place within the larger Rosenwald movement.
In addition to preserving the site’s history, the signage is expected to create another point of interest in Cape Charles, giving residents and visitors an opportunity to learn about the generations of students, teachers and families connected to the former school.
With Town Council’s approval of the CUP, the Rosenwald School Restoration Initiative can move forward with the comprehensive sign plan and further develop the Impact Center as a place for historic interpretation, education and community use.
