CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Planning and Zoning Department is ramping up its efforts to address properties in the Historic District that are at risk of demolition by neglect. As part of an early intervention initiative, town staff are working closely with property owners to develop and implement plans to correct deficiencies and bring buildings into compliance with the building code, zoning ordinance, and historic district guidelines.
Several properties have recently been sent letters regarding possible violations of demolition by neglect, including:
- 115 Fig Street
- 122 Pine Street
- 400 Jefferson Avenue
- 636 Madison Avenue
- 649 Monroe Avenue
The Planning and Zoning Department has reported a positive response from property owners, who have expressed their intent to take corrective actions. The department will continue to oversee these efforts, ensuring that the properties are restored and no longer pose a blight on the neighborhood.
However, due to the significant time and effort required to manage these cases, the department will not be taking on any additional properties until the current list is resolved. Exceptions will only be made for unforeseen emergencies or acts of God.

Residents who have concerns about the condition of a property are encouraged to contact the Building and Planning Departments by emailing codeofficial@capecharles.org or planner@capecharles.org. Staff will inspect the property and consider it for future enforcement efforts once the current caseload is reduced.
