CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The town of Cape Charles has an opening for a new entry-level position focused on inspecting and regulating short-term rental properties as the coastal community continues to address the growing vacation rental market.
The position will report to both the Director of Planning & Zoning and the Code Enforcement Officer, reflecting the town’s comprehensive approach to rental property oversight.
Primary duties include inspecting residential short-term rental properties for compliance with the Statewide Building Code, Town Code and Zoning Ordinance. The role also involves investigating complaints, enforcing rental property regulations and handling administrative tasks including monthly and annual compliance reports.
Town officials described the position as “boots on the ground” work requiring strong customer service and administrative skills. The successful candidate must demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel, along with solid organizational and communication abilities.
While not required, experience in construction, building inspections, zoning, real estate or property management would be advantageous. The town also values experience in compliance or policy enforcement.
The position requires candidates to obtain state-level licensure through required classes. Applicants must hold a valid Virginia driver’s license in good standing and be physically capable of navigating stairs and occasionally using ladders during property inspections.
The full-time, non-exempt position is eligible for overtime pay and includes a comprehensive benefits package with state retirement through the Virginia Retirement System.
Cape Charles has experienced significant growth in short-term rentals in recent years as the Eastern Shore town has become an increasingly popular tourist destination. The new position reflects municipal efforts to balance tourism revenue with residential community needs.
