Cape Charles Library Sees Surge in Summer Activity, Reading Program Registrations Top 100

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Memorial Library continues to see high community engagement this summer, with 102 people now registered for its annual Summer Reading Program, according to the library’s latest weekly report.

Library staff reported 692 visitors over the past week and circulated 415 items. They also provided notary services for 13 documents and hosted a series of programs for all ages, including STEM initiatives and storytime sessions.

Summer programming remains a major draw. “Little Sprouts” story and craft time drew 19 participants, while “Big Sprouts” attracted 9. Two guests attended a session with the Master Gardeners, and 30 children engaged with passive crafts throughout the week. The library added 57 new Summer Reading Program registrations during this period alone.

Behind the scenes, staff have been busy preparing grab-and-go activity bags for the Fourth of July, organizing newly received STEM Kit materials, and continuing to update reading program statistics. Office and program spaces are also nearing the end of a reorganization effort.

In addition to programming, staff participated in professional development through the Eastern Shore Public Library (ESPL) Manager’s Meeting and a webinar hosted by the Virginia Risk Sharing Association (VRSA).

The library’s summer efforts aim to provide educational, creative, and social opportunities for residents and visitors of all ages during the busiest season in Cape Charles.
