CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Memorial Library is inviting readers of all ages to kick off the summer with an afternoon of family-friendly activities during its 2026 Summer Reading Program Kickoff Party on June 18.
The event, themed “Unearth a Story,” will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at the library building, located at 201 Mason Ave.
Library officials say the celebration will mark the start of the annual Summer Reading Challenge and will feature entertainment, crafts, treats and opportunities for children to take home a dinosaur-themed surprise.
Activities scheduled for the afternoon include registration for the Summer Reading Challenge, a performance by Ryan the Balloon Guy, crafts and refreshments, and an “Adopt a Dinosaur” activity while supplies last. Community partners participating in the event include BayCreek, the Eastern Shore Literacy Council, and WHRO-PBS Kids.
The library noted that the first 50 participants who register for the Summer Reading Challenge will receive a special “dino bag.”
The Summer Reading Program is designed to encourage children, teens and adults to continue reading during the summer months while helping maintain literacy skills between school years.
The event is supported by the Friends of the Cape Charles Memorial Library, whose contributions help fund library programs and activities throughout the year.
Library officials emphasized that all library programs are free and open to the public.
