CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Town Council will hold a Special Meeting and Town Hall on Aug. 7 at the Civic Center to discuss plans for a new Municipal Building and a proposed temporary relocation of administrative offices to Trinity United Methodist Church.
Town officials have been working for months to design a new building on Cassatt Parkway to house all legislative, administrative and police functions. But the project has been delayed as the town explores alternative sites and updates construction plans to meet current building codes. In May, the council voted to move the project to seven town-owned parcels at the corner of Fig Street and Randolph Avenue.
Because the current Municipal Building is overcrowded and in poor condition, the council is also considering a two-year lease with Trinity UMC to temporarily house administrative functions. The space, previously used by Cape Charles Christian School, would cost $4,729 a month for the first year, with 1.5% annual rent increases and options for up to four one-year extensions.
The lease includes exclusive office space for the town, shared access to restrooms and a kitchen, and provisions for the church to complete extensive interior and exterior repairs before the October 1 move-in date. The town has agreed to reimburse up to $10,000 for mold and mildew remediation caused by past water leaks.
Construction plans for the new Municipal Building are expected to take six months to complete before the project can be bid. Officials said the Trinity UMC lease would provide flexibility if the new building faces further delays or affordability issues.
