CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Public Works Department has been keeping pace with seasonal demands in trash collection, brush removal, and equipment maintenance as the town gears up for its Fourth of July festivities.
Public Works Manager reported that the team continues to make progress in refining operational processes, particularly with short-term rental (STR) trash can deployment. “We’re working through the kinks as we go,” he said. “The only way to know what works and what doesn’t is by trying each method.”
The department completed its second round of STR trash can distribution, with previous issues from the first round now resolved. “We’re just in the clear as far as counts go,” the manager said. Multiple work orders related to STR trash cans were completed, and numerous corrections have been made.
Meetings were held with staff to coordinate preparations for the town’s July 4 celebration. Discussions also included the town clock with representatives from Main Street and the Cape Charles Police Department.
Day-to-day operations remain steady, with Rick, a public works team leader, overseeing routine tasks. Highlights from recent activity include:
- Brush and Yard Debris: Nine full truckloads—approximately 1,530 cubic yards—of brush were taken for recycling.
- Trash Collection: Municipal trash pickup continues daily, with 38 public cans serviced each day. Two landfill loads were hauled in the last reporting period.
- Trash Can Maintenance: Five trash cans were delivered, and one missed pickup was corrected. Residential and STR can swaps and repairs were performed, including a bulk pickup of a refrigerator at 639 Monroe Ave.
- Work Orders: Several trash-related work orders were completed. Filing cabinets for the Finance Department were also delivered.
- Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance: Mowers received scheduled servicing.
- Groundskeeping: Seasonal mowing, trimming, and edging were completed at various locations including the Keck well property, South Peach, East Monroe, and 623 Jefferson (for code enforcement). Community trail bushes were also trimmed.
The town should fire Ralph and hire Rick in his position.
