CAPE CHARLES, Va. — As the summer season comes to a close, the Cape Charles Public Works Department has shifted its focus from routine seasonal tasks to broader maintenance projects across town. According to Public Works Manager, the department completed its final beach sweeping for the season this week and prepared for the community potluck held in Central Park on Saturday.
“With the grass finally slowing down, we’ve been able to devote more attention to other tasks,” the Public Works Manager said, noting the department’s ability to assist with multiple projects around town.
Among these tasks, the department supported the weekend’s concert and potluck in Central Park and completed weekly maintenance of the park’s fountain. On Washington Avenue, quotes were gathered for the removal of a tree flagged for safety concerns.
In terms of street and homeowner support, Public Works helped several residents on Bay Avenue by removing sand that had accumulated on the street. Yard and brush debris also remained a priority, with the team collecting 12 full truckloads, totaling approximately 2,040 cubic yards, for recycling. Additionally, the department conducted normal trash pick-ups, servicing 48 municipal trash cans daily and addressing two bulk pickups.
Vehicle and equipment maintenance included replacing the windshield of the Building Department’s vehicle, while the crew continued its usual brush, yard debris, and trash pickups.
Routine seasonal grass cutting continued throughout town, including weed eating and edging. Public Works also assisted with the mowing of a property on Jefferson Avenue at the town’s request.
The department managed several work orders beyond routine trash can duties and completed additional maintenance tasks to ensure the town’s infrastructure remains in good shape as the busy summer season winds down.
