Cape Charles Residents Complain about local postal boxes

CAPE CHARLES — The Town of Cape Charles continues to respond promptly to citizen feedback through its Report-a-Concern system, which allows residents to submit issues directly to Town staff for review and action. Each concern receives an immediate response and is forwarded to the appropriate department for evaluation and scheduling based on urgency and priority.

These specific concerns were submitted:

Postal Boxes:
Residents reported that the blue U.S. Postal Service collection boxes around town are in poor condition and need replacement. The Town’s Public Works team contacted the Cape Charles Post Office, which confirmed that while the boxes are structurally sound, they will not be replaced—only new stickers can be applied. In response, the Town Manager submitted a full assessment with photos to the USPS, requesting that all boxes be repainted, fitted with new decals, or replaced entirely.

200 Block of Mason Avenue:
A concern was raised about two sidewalk cutouts intended for landscaping that have remained barren, causing dirt and mulch to spill into the street during rain and wind. The Zoning Department is contacting property owners to clarify what the approved redevelopment plans specified—one cutout was meant to feature a planter and the other a tree. Town officials have notified the resident that a final resolution will likely come in the spring.

Jefferson Avenue:
A resident inquired about “Badger Trucks” seen working in the area and thanked the Town for arranging the removal of a parked boat from the street. The Public Works Department confirmed that the trucks were hired by the Accomack-Northampton Water and Sewer Authority (AWA) to perform pipe cleaning.

Strawberry Plaza:
Another concern involved decorative lights wrapped around trees, with fears that the wiring could harm the trees’ growth. The Public Works Engineer responded by sharing a photo from the Town Manager showing that expansion bands are used in the wiring to allow for healthy growth and prevent damage.

Town officials emphasized that the Report-a-Concern system remains an important tool for residents to help maintain the town’s safety, beauty, and functionality.
