Cape Charles, Va. — The Cape Charles Town Council is moving forward with a revised master plan for the town’s beachfront sand dunes, aimed at both enhancing the scenic beauty of the area and improving environmental safety. The plan, which includes modifications to the dunes along Bay Avenue, is designed to provide unobstructed sunset views while also bolstering the dunes’ ability to trap windblown sand, a feature intended to benefit both residents and visitors.
In recent years, the sand dunes along Bay Avenue have experienced significant growth, with the footprint of the dunes expanding as fine-grain sand is blown from the beach berm. This accumulation has not only increased the height and width of the dunes but has also caused sand deposits along Bay Avenue and in nearby lawns.
The current dunes, which have tripled in size since 2010, are a product of both natural processes and human intervention. Since the installation of breakwater structures on the northern end of the public beach, the dunes have become more stable. However, these breakwaters have also contributed to the continued wind transport of fine sand, necessitating the use of sand fencing and nourishment activities to manage dune growth.
Cape Charles’ dunes serve a critical role in protecting the town from storm erosion. While they cannot prevent storm surges or flooding, the dunes help safeguard the street and sidewalks by absorbing wave attacks during elevated sea levels and storms. The vegetated dunes also trap windblown sand, aiding in the natural expansion of the dune line.
The updated master plan is expected to be implemented in stages, with input from environmental regulators influencing the final design and scope of the modifications. Town officials believe these efforts will not only improve the aesthetic appeal of the beachfront but also contribute to the long-term sustainability and resilience of the area.
