CAPE CHARLES, Va. — From parking problems and broken shells on the beach to streetlight outages and late-night noise complaints, Cape Charles residents continue to use the town’s Report-A-Concern system to bring neighborhood issues to the attention of local officials.
In a recent update, the Cape Charles town manager outlined several complaints received through the system and explained how town staff are responding.
According to the town manager, every submission receives an immediate acknowledgment and is forwarded to the appropriate department director. Complaints are then evaluated based on urgency, public safety and operational priorities.
Harbor Parking and Sidewalk Obstructions
One complaint involved deteriorating parking lines at the harbor parking lot and trailers reportedly being left in the lot without accompanying trucks.
Town officials said the harbor lot is scheduled to be repaved and restriped in spring 2027. Meanwhile, concerns about unattended trailers have been referred to the Police Department and harbormaster for investigation.
Another resident reported vehicles parking on the sidewalk near Chesapeake Properties, blocking pedestrian access.
Town staff contacted the business owner and requested greater attention to how vehicles are parked, including monitoring customers who may be obstructing the sidewalk. The complaint was also forwarded to police.
Beach Conditions Draw Complaints
A resident raised concerns about the amount of broken shells along the Cape Charles beachfront, describing the conditions as the worst they had witnessed in nine years.
Town officials acknowledged the complaint and said one additional beach-combing operation is planned.
However, staff noted that natural shoreline conditions are difficult to control, particularly when tides and weather continually deposit new material on the beach.
With inclement weather approaching, the town expects to postpone additional beach combing for a couple of weeks.
Abandoned Bicycles and Streetlight Outages
A complaint about bicycles left in the roadway near 202 Strawberry Street, reportedly interfering with parking for Cape Charles Christian School, has been resolved.
According to the town, the bicycle owners retrieved and relocated the bikes.
Residents also reported streetlights being out along Washington Avenue between Peach and Fig streets.
The Public Works Department will inspect the lights and attempt repairs. If the problem cannot be resolved by town personnel, the matter will be referred to A&N Electric Cooperative.
Late-Night Noise Complaints
A resident reported noise disturbances along Jefferson Avenue after 10 p.m.
Town officials advised that noise complaints occurring outside regular business hours should be reported directly to the Police Department while the disturbance is taking place.
The town explained that Report-A-Concern submissions are not continuously monitored when municipal offices are closed, making direct police notification the appropriate response for immediate disturbances.
A System for Tracking Community Concerns
The Report-A-Concern system provides residents with a formal way to notify town officials about maintenance problems, public safety concerns and other neighborhood issues.
The recent complaints illustrate the range of matters handled through the system, from routine maintenance requests to potential parking and noise violations requiring police involvement.
While some issues, such as the abandoned bicycles, have already been resolved, others will require additional investigation, maintenance work or longer-term capital improvements.
Town officials emphasize that submissions are acknowledged and routed for review, although the timing of a resolution depends on the nature and urgency of each complaint.
