At the October 9th CBES Candidate forum, Elizabeth Lankford addressed the audience with a bizarre detail. While she was campaigning over the weekend, she returned home to find a chocolate replica of the male anatomy wrapped in pink paper and left on her doorstep. A note was attached that read, “Eat a d*ck.”
Langford told the Mirror, “We are disappointed that in 2019 someone thought it was appropriate to send a lewd package to a candidate for public office. It’s time to encourage women to step up and run. As your next State Senator, I will work across the aisle and stand up for women across the commonwealth. It’s time to let politicians and bullies know that we don’t tolerate harassment like this anymore.”
“I was offended, I was appalled, but most of all I was disappointed that this was happening in 2019. We need to be supporting and encouraging women, especially young women to run for office….to whoever sent it, I want you to know you have not intimidated me, and you have not discouraged me…I am running to let women know we will not take harassment like this anymore. “-Elizabeth Lankford, her statement from the CBES forum.
Lankford handled the situation with bravery and grace. She showed the kind of intelligence, resolve and fortitude that we expect from our leaders in Richmond. That a Democrat supporter would do something like this should not come as a surprise to anyone (ask anyone that has the courage to wear a red MAGA hat in public these days).
The person that left the item on Lankford’s doorstep may have been trying to send a message, but the result may not be what they were looking for.
The message is maybe it’s time for a real change here on the Shore.
