CAPE CHARLES, Va. — A Colorado man who was struck by lightning at the Cape Charles beachfront has died from his injuries, according to a family member who confirmed his identity.
Justin Reid McConnell, 41, of Arvada, Colorado, was fatally injured in the Aug. 20 incident, which also injured an adult woman.
Cape Charles Police Chief James Pruitt said emergency services were dispatched at approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, to the beach near Washington and Bay avenues following a report of a lightning strike.
In a prepared release, Pruitt said first responders arrived to find two people who had been struck by lightning. McConnell was in cardiac arrest, while the woman suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
First responders attempted lifesaving measures, but McConnell succumbed to his injuries, Pruitt said.
“The Cape Charles Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” Pruitt said in the release.
The lightning strike occurred along the town’s public beachfront near the intersection of Washington and Bay avenues.
