The new Omicron variant of the coronavirus is upending markets and mobility, despite reports from one of the first South African doctors to identify the variant that cases have been “very mild.” Still, government officials in several countries, including the US, are once again imposing travel bans, mask mandates, and enhanced testing requirements.
How is the panic over the new variant impacting schools?
The Guardian reported that teachers in England are calling for masks to be mandatory in secondary schools, a practice that the country has so far been able to avoid in most of its schools. Minnesota Public Radio reported on how the state is preparing for Omicron and bracing for the potential of more school closures. And education news site, The 74, reported that the new variant may accelerate the recent uptick in school closures across the US.
