Governor Glenn Youngkin announced that five Cape Charles Organizations received a total of $52,470 from the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) Tourism Marketing Programs. In total, VTC awarded more than $3.2 million for 236 local and regional tourism marketing programs across the state to help increase visitation and revenue for Virginia’s localities through tourism.
Our local grant recipients included: 1) Cape Charles Community Sailing received a $3,000 grant for their “Anchored in Community” project, 2) The Town of Cape Charles received a $20,000 grant for their “Cape Charles Discovery” program, 3) The Bay Haven Inn of Cape Charles received a $15,970.00 grant for their “Experience Your Haven On the Shore” project, 4) Cape Charles Main Street received a $7,500 grant for their project “Make Your Festive Friday a Festive Weekend”, and 5) Citizens for Central Park received a $6,000.00 grant for their Summer Concerts in the Park series.
“We are thrilled to see so many grant recipients this season from Cape Charles, whose projects not only promote our town as a tourism destination but bring us together as a community,” said Karen Zamorski, Executive Director of Cape Charles Main Street.
Using the hub and spoke tourism partnership model, Virginia entities partner to apply for funding. Partners may consist of Virginia cities, towns, counties, convention and visitors’ bureaus, chambers of commerce, other local or regional destination marketing organizations, private businesses, museums, attractions, cultural events, and other tourism-related businesses. “VTC’s tourism marketing and sponsorship programs are designed to increase visitor spending by leveraging limited marketing dollars, to stimulate new tourism marketing through partnerships, and to extend the “Virginia is for Lovers” brand to drive visitation,” said Rita McClenny, VTC President and CEO. Could not agree more, what Cape Charles needs is a 200% increase in tourist. Can there be too many summer people? A resounding NO NO NO! It also would be nice for resident to have them here 12 months a year, it gets so boring in the winter without golf carts clogging the streets and boorish tourist flooding the restaurants. The 200% is of course yearly.I have consulted with a large group of residents and they, to a person ,would happily donate 5% of assessed value of their home to a “increase tourist fund” On a YEARLY basis.

I suppose it will be a good thing for Cape Charles to receive this money…as long as none of it is used to support dancing on Strawberry Street.
