Below is the response by DEQ to a FOIA requesting information about poultry farms and water drawn from the aquifer.
PROVIDE A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL ESTIMATED WITHDRAWAL OF GROUNDWATER FOR THE 54 POULTRY FACILITIES WITH THE CURRENT ESTIMATED AMOUNT (1.179 MGD) FOR THE SAME.
The preliminary estimate for withdrawal of groundwater, provided at the public information briefing in 2018, was 3.1 million gallons per day (MGD). This was based on a worst-case scenario because DEQ did not have validated withdrawal information. Rather than underestimate the withdrawal, DEQ assumed that all 83 poultry farms possessing a Virginia Pollution Abatement Permit (VPA) would withdraw the equivalent of the highest water use day of the year every day of the year. DEQ used industry provided estimates of water use.
The 1.179 MGD presented on April 30, 2019, at the public information briefing is DEQ’s final estimate based on the applications and data reported by 54 facilities that are operating under a Consent Special Order (CSO). The estimate is derived from metered data and a water use formula developed from the most recent scientific literature on cooling water use from a study of 10 years of metered data on the Delmarva Peninsula12. The water use also reflects the water use distribution from the actual poultry growth cycle and time of year.
