This gossip was recently forwarded to the Mirror:
“Heard the proposed Brew Pub owners on Peach Street were handed, from the town, a water/sewer hook up fee of over $42,000.00!! Guess the proverbial handshake was yanked back and swiftly replaced with a crippling kick to the groin, once again. Damn shame… we were really looking forward to sitting back in the Beer Garden with a cold beer and a brick oven pizza. We’ll just have to admire another empty building on our way out of town to spend our money elsewhere. Sounds like the waste water treatment plant is going to have to wait on it’s solid gold doorknobs. Good job Cape Charles.”
Due to the holiday, and the general lack of response, we have been unable to confirm this…however, we’re not really surprised. But, we’ll keep you posted.

If true, the town’s entire hierarchy needs to be booted out and replaced with people interested in making cape Charles a better place to live. I very much hope this is not true.

I am all for a brew pub in Cape Charles.
The site, listed above, might help figure where the $42000 figure came from.
Could the town “cut a deal” with the proposed business owners, as it has apparently done for other endevors?
Cindy Russell says
But they can hand over the old school to an out of state developer for $10 and allow him to be exempt from paying the water bill. This town wants to bring in tourists and families but doesn’t allow it to be family friendly.Young professional couples are buying up the homes in town for their second homes.Wouldn’t it be nice to accommodate them with a few good places to go.
David Gay says
How does this compare to the old school deal? Have the old school developers paid any fees to the town for water sewage hookup?
Donald Sparrow says
The $42,000.00 hook-up fee for a Brew Pub in Cape Charles is a disgrace ! I bet if this was a friend of Town Council members they would have given them $42,000.00 to come here ! The town should support local business instead of all the real estate offices, antique shops and other seasonable stores that do not want local business ! You cannot buy gasoline, clothes,or groceries in this town !Great progress Cape Charles ! They do not like local people , all they care about is people that have summer homes, or live in a gated community !Wake up Cape Charles, vote these people out of Town Council You know who they are !All they want to do is borrow money and run Cape Charles into the ground with high taxes and water bills ! The town should go after the people that owes thousands of dollars in taxes !

The Eastern Shore of Virginia has been given away one acre at a time, one vote at a time and no one has hardly uttered a word. The crimes and drugs have gotten harder. It is as though ‘The Shore’s People ‘ became politically correct and stopped policing themselves. As though some how they lost their voices and gave up. I grew up on the seaside in the late seventies and early eighties. It was not Law Enforcement we were scared of, it was Grown Men in the community that would have taken you to task for whatever it was you were doing wrong and then called your parents. Those Men took care of thing that were not any of Law Enforcement’s business. Today you have the results of Political Correctness that has seeped into the fibers of The Shore from Kids returning from Liberal Colleges and Come-Heres that Shore-Grown, Local, Real Estate Agents marketed land to. It was sad to watch it go and heart breaking to see what is left behind.

If everybody gets a sweetheart deal on water/sewer hookups, that means we all pay more. I can imagine the outcry if such a deal had been extended in this case. The same folks would say….”the Town is giving away the farm”! Remember, go after Bay Creek–make them pay. How is this different–except for scale.

I heard about this last week. This is another example of how Cape Charles mismanagement will bring down the county. Main Street project is just like putting lipstick on a pig.
James Hopkins says
Cape Charles needs another place to drink?? What’s wrong with the ones you have? I guess if you spent enough time at the pubs, you really won’t care what the town does….as long as they occasionally put in a new place to get a refreshing beverage.
Donald Sparrow says
We have only 2 places you can go in town and have an alcoholic beverage! Both of them do not cater to local people , all they care about is tourist and property owners! I cannot wait until the Shanty reopens!
Gene Kelly says
I would beg to differ that we don’t cater to local people. Everyone is welcome at Kelly’s, and has been for the last 10 years. All we require is that our guests treat our patrons and staff with the respect that they deserve…pretty simple formula.
Elizabeth "Beth" Davis says
Last time I checked there are 6 places in town where one can go and have a tasty beverage – Kelly’s, Hook U Up, Cape Charles Coffee House, The Coach House and The Eatery at the Oyster Farm – and then of course, Shanty makes 7 during the season. Since I am a local person and I frequent all 6 places plus I often seen “born here’s” (which I’m assuming is what you mean by “local people”) in all 7 places, I can safely deduce all 7 places cater to “local” and non-local people alike. By the way – what is a local person these days? Is someone from Exmore considered “local”; how about from Onancock; what about Wachapreague; or Salisbury? Is it owning property that makes you local; so renters who live here wouldn’t be “local”? Someone please help me understand “local”. I feel like a local, but alas maybe I’m not……
Janet bruce says
I don’t think anyone would deny there are plenty of watering holes in town, but do any of them serve real, brick oven pizza? A good pizza restaurant would have made a nice addition to the plethora of seafood that is available. As to what makes a local, I, too, am clueless. I own a home here but am definitely a come-here and always will be I fear.

Nothing is a surprise here on the ESVA. Its a “Shore Thing”!! The dying town is still dying. Look elsewhere on the shore. Maybe you were blessed!

I would like to know the actual facts of this self proclaimed article of “gossip”. Generally, most stories have two sides and I am sure this one does as well. We need to have all of the facts before we jump to conclusions.
