  1. I have done a lot of research on the Dreyfus affair. While anti-Semitism was one of the driving forces in the charges against Dreyfus, equally important was that his family were German-speaking Alsatians who were simply not trusted by the French government, since Alsace, then (since 1871) part of Germany, was prospering and there was very little popular desire on the part of the Alsatian working and peasant classes to return to French rule. Dreyfus, whose family was very pro-French and left Alsace upon its annexation by Germany, was still not trusted, he was doubly suspect, as a German-speaking Alsatian and as a Jew.
