  1. 1719: Fiume was a part of the Holy Roman Empire, not the Ottoman Empire. It passed to Austria and then the Hungarian half of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. With the collapse of A-H in 1919 it became a free city, then bounced between Mussolini’s Italy and finally wound up as part of Yugoslavia. The majority language was a dialect of Italian until the Italian population was expelled after WWII.
