UPDATE: The Mirror erroneously published that Town Council reappointed Kerry Shackleford to the Historic District Review Board (HRDB) for another 5-year term. Shackleford’s was instead denied by the Town Council.
According Mayor Dize, 4 out of 6 Council members felt like they wanted to go in a different direction.Â
His current term was set to expire on January 8, 2021.
During the discussion, Councilman Andrew Follmer used the appointment to admonish the current HDRB for creating an adversarial culture with citizens that are trying to upgrade and repair older homes in the district. He stated that most citizens that have dealt with the board felt they have not been treated well, that the current board is difficult to work with, and more importantly, inconsistent in its rulings.
He noted that treating a town where people live as a museum is driving away residents, investors, and businesses.
Further, Follmer said that it was the responsibility of the Town Council to go after the HDRB, and force a change in leadership.
Councilwoman Tammy Holloway, concurred with Follmer’s assessment.
Future analysis of the HDRB by Town Council may take place in the new year, but a confirmation of time and schedule was not determined.
