The updated forecast for Hurricane Florence predicts landfall further south in the Carolinas and the area south of Cape Hatteras will bear the brunt of the storm. Although this shift puts Cape Charles in a more favorable position, we are still likely to experience periods of strong winds, street flooding from storm surge, and possible power outages.

Please stay off the beach and fishing pier during the storm. Avoid unnecessary risks and stay safe!

Please stay in your home during the storm unless there is an emergency.

If residents would like to move their vehicles to higher ground, the Bay Creek Golf Course Parking lot is available for use. Residents should stop at the Bay Creek Gatehouse and obtain a hang tag to be placed on the rearview mirror.

We want to remind everyone, including boaters, to secure your property.

Boat owners: If you must leave your boat in the water, please make sure that it is secure. For boats parked on the streets, please make sure to secure your boat to the trailer to ensure that it does not float off the trailer during high water.

If you are a neighbor of a part-time resident, please pay attention to your neighbors’ homes as well as your own. Below is a list of items for consideration to avoid damages from the winds that may come with the storm:

Secure all Outdoor Items in case of strong winds:

Please DO NOT put any yard debris, brush or other trash on the street curb. Any debris can pose a safety hazard in strong winds and will clog storm drains if any flooding occurs.

If there is any street flooding, DO NOT drive your vehicle through high water. If you cannot see the pavement, DO NOT go through it as this could cause irreparable damage to your vehicle.

2. Go to www.capecharles.org and sign up via the Nixle Widget which is located on our home page.

The Cape Charles Town Hall will be closed Friday September 14, 2018. Town Hall will reopen on Monday September 17, 2018 at 8:00 am.

The Cape Charles Memorial Library will be closed Friday and Saturday, September 14 and 15. The Library will close today, Thursday, at 4:00 pm. All scheduled events are cancelled. The Library will reopen Monday September 17, 2018 at 10:00 am.

The Town Council and Planning Commission Public Hearing scheduled for Monday September 17, 2018 at 6:00 pm in the Civic Center is on schedule.

Hurricane Florence: Closure of Northampton County Offices: With the opening of the County’s Emergency Operations Center at 9:00 a.m., Thursday, September 13, 2018, normal County office operations will cease. That means that the County Administration Building will be closed on Thursday, September 13, 2018. Offices affected include the County Administrator’s Office, Finance Office, Information Technology Office, Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office, County Treasurer’s Office, Planning, Permitting & Enforcement Office and the Voter Registration Office. The Northampton County Sanitary Landfill and all six Solid Waste Collection Sites will be open on Thursday, September 13, 2018 until 12:00 noon.

Normal county operations will resume as soon as it is safely

USCG Station Cape Charles Open House scheduled for this Friday is postponed due to Hurricane Florence. We will let you know once we reschedule.

The Eastern Shore Public Library in Accomac and the Northampton Free Library in Nassawadox are open today, Wednesday, September 12. The Accomac library only will be open extended hours until 8:00 p.m. today. The Nassawadox library will close at its regularly scheduled time today at 6:00 p.m. Chincoteague Island Library is closed today, Wednesday, September 12.

Eastern Shore of Virginia libraries in Accomac, Chincoteague, and Nassawdox will be closed on Thursday, September 13 and Friday, September 14. Saturday library hours for all libraries will be posted on their Facebook page and announced on WESR.

The libraries ask that patrons do not venture out to return library books until the libraries re-open. Library fines will be waived for any items due during the emergency closings.

The St. Charles Parish Picnic scheduled for Sunday, September 16 has been postponed to September 23.

EASTERN SHORE PUBLIC LIBRARY WAIVES FINES DURING STORM Notice: Eastern Shore Public Library encourages you to checkout library books, magazines, and DVD’s prior to the approaching storm. Ebooks and magazines can be downloaded for free from the library website anytime that you have Internet connectivity. Reading can be fun and rewarding activity when homebound during storms.

If the library closes due to inclement weather, staff asks that books are not returned to the libraries until the library re-opens to regularly scheduled times. Books can become damaged in book returns during heavy rains. Library fines will be waived for any materials that become overdue when the library has emergency closings. Do not risk your safety to return library items on time!
