EXMORE, Va. — A local citizens group is ramping up opposition to a proposal that would allow a Kansas-based developer to inject treated poultry waste — and potentially human waste — into deep sediment layers beneath the Eastern Shore’s sole-source aquifer. This week, the group sponsored radio advertisements on WESR criticizing the project and urging residents to get involved.
The ads, paid for by “Citizens in Love with the Shore,” allege that the developer, the Carrie Rich Group, canceled a public hearing scheduled for Nov. 20 at Exmore Town Hall after failing to provide citizens with adequate information about the project or what public comments were expected to address.
“Citizens of Exmore are getting tired of out-of-state developers telling us how much more they love the Shore than we do,” the ad states, before accusing the company of attempting to “fix” problems residents do not believe exist. The group claims the proposal would pump “millions of tons of chicken manure and perhaps human waste” into underground layers connected to the region’s drinking-water supply.
“Exmore is not broken. We don’t need to be fixed,” the ad continues, ending with a pointed message directed at the developer: “Go back to Kansas. Go back to Maryland… We are fine without you.”
State environmental regulators have not yet issued a final determination on the proposal, which has drawn increasing scrutiny amid regional concerns about groundwater protection.

Thanks for airing. The Carrie Rich proposal is for a large medical complex and 150 homes in Exmore…on land that is not zoned for a high concentration of homes. A MD developer. Another developer from Kansas is proposing to inject 150,000 wet tons of chicken waste into the sediments below the drinking water source on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Different developers, both proposing to “fix” problems claimed to be exising on the Shore. They do not know, the Shore obviously,,,,,and once they learn that the citizens are not stupid, with luck they will retreat. And that is not that we do not want development on the Shore…we welcome all reasonable improvements and investment.
This insanity must be stopped. We have a sole source aquifer. The Eastern Shore of Virginia is not a dumping ground for waste.
Unlike a septic tank we’ll be unable to pump out the aquifer when needed.
