The Cape Charles Town Council removed the Madison Avenue Parking War presentations from the agenda of this week’s Regular Meeting. Town Manager Hozey told the Mirror, “The situation on Madison Ave is far too complex to describe briefly. The reason for the postponement was to explore additional options with VDOT. Once we get more information about what’s possible, we will reschedule the meeting. However, with everyone’s holiday schedules, it may not be something we can pull together until after the new year”.
Public Comments
During public comments, Madison Avenue residents accused the town of changing tacks on the issue, moving more in favor of Wendell Distributing. In an email, the residents claimed Town Manager Hozey told them that parking in front of their own homes was being considered by the town as harassment against the Wendell business. They noted that taking away parking in front of their own homes was a complete contradiction to what had been previously proposed. The question being posed to the town is why is the parking at the 600 blocks of Madison being treated differently than other tax-paying residences in the Town of Cape Charles. They further dispute the harassment of the business regarding the upkeep of property–residents note the historic structure owned by the Wendell’s at 636 Madison, which sits between the distributor and the neighbor, has fallen into extreme disrepair, essentially being left to be demolished unless repairs are made. Once again, the residents request that Wendell Distributing be held to the same standards that the rest of the population is held to. The residents are requesting further discussion and possible changes to current ordinances.
