The Cape Charles Community Enhancement Board (VA Main Street) contracted, via VA Main Street, the research firm of Arnett & Muldrow to conduct an economic and market research study and survey to capture real market data for Cape Charles.
Part of the process involved extensive in-person stakeholder interviews. a week-long zip code data gathering with the help of 10+ merchants (capturing who the market is in the “slower season”-will be conducted again in “high season”, to determine market distinctions and differences)
,100+ surveys conducted with residents and visitors, raw data from the Town of Cape Charles and Northampton County, as well as accessing market research databases.
The report noted that full-time residents make up 35% of the population, while those the own property as secondhome/vacation also make up 35%). 45% of visitors stay 2-3 nights(weekend)
Non-residents visit the town once a month in Winter, but once a week in the summer.
The most popular reasons to come to Cape Charles are dining, shopping and of course, the beach.
The survey also noted segments that were lacking, such as grocery (66%), Urgent Care (64%), dry cleaning (42%), family friendly entertainment (37%), more family restaurants (29%), clothing and a doctor (we guess Dr. Delessio doesn’t count?).
