Join the celebration of the National Arbor Day Foundation’s 150th anniversary this year by coming out to Strawberry Street Plaza on Saturday, April 30, from 9:00 – noon. 2022 marks the second year of our town being recognized as an Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA.
At this event, adults and children, alike, will learn how trees benefit homeowners, communities, and the world. They will have the opportunity to test their knowledge on the types of trees found on the Eastern Shore, including those that are native to our area.
Members of the Cape Charles Tree Advisory Board (TAB) and representatives from the Eastern Shore Soil & Water Conservation District, Eastern Shore of Virginia Master Gardeners, Virginia Forestry Service, and Northampton County Extension Service along with a certified arborist will be available to answer questions about what trees to plant and how to prune and care for existing trees. Activities will include a game to identify seeds and cones, and a scavenger hunt to locate some of the town’s most special trees. Free sapling, seedlings, and seeds will be given out and include, among others, Northern Red Oak, Grey Dogwood, Butterfly Weed, New York Aster, Cardinal Flower, and Black-eyed Susan.
These plants are provided by the Soil & Water Conservation District.
The event will kick off with Mayor Smitty Dize reading this year’s Arbor Day Proclamation and acknowledging Cape Charles’
distinction as the first “Tree City” in Northampton County. As an Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA, Cape Charles will ensure that
its healthy trees remain a benefit to the community.
TAB, formed to help assure the maintenance and expansion of the town’s tree canopy and the health and safe condition of trees in
the community, will host the event. Instrumental in attaining the “Tree City” distinction, this group is available to advise the mayor,
Town Council and Town staff regarding preservation and management of the community forest and to help coordinate activities of
the Cape Charles Master Tree Plan and the Arbor Day Foundation. The group is also available to advise residents.
