In a move set to redefine leisure offerings in Cape Charles, a new chapter is poised to unfold as the Elizabeth River Ferry 111 changes hands. James and Dawn Nevill have recently acquired the ferry and are prepared to offer the Eastern Shore a touch of maritime luxury.
Renaming ERF 111 “The Chesapeake Queen,” the Nevills have set their sights on introducing captivating experiences along the Chesapeake Bay. Their plans include the launch of 2.5-hour afternoon cruises and 3-hour sunset voyages.
With a nod to romance and the allure of the sea, the ferry will cater exclusively to Eastern Shore couples, offering intimate small wedding cruises every Sunday. This unique offering is poised to become a cherished memory for couples seeking an extraordinary backdrop for their special day.
Below is a note from Dawn Nevell:
Our vessel is documented through the US Coastguard with Official No. 968634. COD, Featuring a steel hull construction. Measuring 65ft. in length, 22ft. in breadth, and 6ft. in depth with a gross tonnage of 57 GRT and net tonnage of 45 NRT. Powered by two Volvo Penta Diesel Engines with just over 16,000 hours each. They are 2013 epa-regulated marine compression ignition engines.
Of the other Elizabeth River Ferries that sold, one is running out of Georgia and one out of Canada. Neither of them is on a pond and is still afloat and operating according to the Hampton Roads Transit Authority.
Our captain will have to have hold a master’s license. I was very happy to be on board our soon-to-be Chesapeake Queen during her voyage to our harbor. We left Portsmouth docks where we fueled up at 12:15 around lunchtime at 3:20 we entered the Cape Charles Harbor, well before happy hour. If my math is correct, ( even though it was a bit of a breezy day) it took us 3 hours and 5 minutes, and we will not run when the weather is counterintuitive.
We won’t ever load the boat with 142 passengers which she is licensed for. Our guests and crew will not number more than 85 which will be spread out on 2 decks. We are working closely with the Coast Guard and will be following their guidelines. And as such, will have their complete blessing and permission before we leave the dock with our first guest. Our goal is to ride to the concrete ships for one run and possibly far enough for a view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in the evening.
The Nevills are poised to elevate the onboard experience by enhancing its amenities. Plans include the addition of two bars and two restrooms, aiming to provide both comfort and luxury for passengers embarking on this maritime escapade.
The Chesapeake Queen is undergoing an overhaul, with the Nevills working diligently to ensure its readiness by spring. Their vision encompasses not only a vessel but an experience that encapsulates the charm and beauty of the Eastern Shore.

A Most Excellent addition for My Homeland! My brother and I grew up riding the ferries from Cape Charles as kids. I always hoped that could happen again. What a great development! I am so pleased and wish them much success! I will certainly use it!

I could not determine if the Ferry will offer service to cross the bay?
Editor’s Note: No, just short excursions out of CC Harbor.
