Eastville, Va. — Northampton County has selected the Richmond-based law firm Hefty, Wiley & Gore to provide interim legal counsel as the county searches for a new County Attorney. The decision was made during Tuesday night’s Board of Supervisors meeting in Eastville.
The selection follows the departure of Michelle Clayton, who officially concluded her tenure as County Attorney last week. Clayton had served in the position for just over a year, having been hired to succeed Bev Leatherbury, who retired from the role of Commonwealth’s Attorney.
According to County Administrator Charlie Kolakowski, Hefty, Wiley & Gore was among several firms that Clayton researched before her departure. The firm will handle legal matters for the county until a permanent replacement for Clayton is found.
The Board of Supervisors will now focus on identifying and hiring a new County Attorney to provide long-term legal guidance for Northampton County.
