Northampton County solid-waste report shows that the county creates 30.6 million pounds of solid waste last year.
Trash is carted across the bay due to the county not having a dedicated landfill. The cost to haul the trash is $757,000.
TFC Recycling in Chesapeake collects recycling for both Northampton and Accomack. 291.32 tons of recyclables were picked up in Northampton last year.
If I remember the history of recycling correctly, glass was the first item that municipalities began to recycle. If not the first, then close to the beginnings of recycling. Now, here on The Shore, we don’t recycle glass. Glass is heavy and causes higher tipping fees. I do not understand the situation. Obviously it is still recycled elsewhere. Why not here ? Does anyone have accurate information on this ?

we should have a campaign to have less trash..I am sad that so much of it is not counted because it is along the highway or in the ditches..Shame on us…This is not a tourist draw for sure…Keep it in your car and take it home or to your nearest convenience center..
At least all the chicken bones are biodegradable and will disappear from the roadside ditches after awhile, if something doesn’t come along and eat them first.
It is hard to convince people to bring chicken bones home with them as they are eating the chicken in the car, when it is so easy to toss them out the window, instead.
Same thing with beer cans.
When I was in the Army, we would go along the road when we had the chance and pick up cans along the way and cash them in for some extra money on the deposit.
Give us more information on how and where to recycle! Some of us want to recycle and don’t have the wherewithall!
I am sorry. I stand corrected. Yes Northampton recycles glass. My mistake in my submission comes from the fact that I forgot to say I went up the road one day and was in an Accomac recycling facility. I often diminish the county dividing line in my own eyes, and consider the two of us to be one. Accomac County will not accept glass for recycling. I was told it’s been this way for quite a while. I can’t for the life of me understand why that would be the situation. Does anyone know why Accomac has swung this way ?
I am aware of places to recycle aluminum cans, junk steel, and junk cars. I am curious as to why plastics, glass, and newspapers are not recycled. Why can’t we find a way to recycle these items here like they do in the city? All these folks trying to turn Cape Charles into Ocean City or Virginia Beach might also want to find a way to do this .
