The Northampton Historic Preservation Society receives a $35,000 Grant from the Eastern Shore of Virginia Community Foundation.
The Northampton Historic Preservation Society (NHPS) announced that it has been awarded a $35,000 grant from the Eastern Shore of Virginia Community Foundation to help make significant progress toward the completion of the 1907 Jail Museum in Eastville, Virginia.
This grant will aid NHPS in its preservation and education efforts for both Eastern Shore visitors and residents. The museum will contain βstoriesβ from the many jails that once stood on the Northampton Court Green. It will also offer information on how to use the historical documents contained in the Northampton Clerkβs office and other online sources when conducting genealogy research.
βNHPS is grateful to the Eastern Shore of Virginia Community Foundationβs contribution toward the $50,000 needed to complete the restoration of the jail and museum,β said Eyre Baldwin, President of the NHPS Board of Directors. βThe Eastern Shore is very lucky indeed to have this vital organization champion our community.β
In 1913, the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA) Northampton Branch (now NHPS), prevented the demolition of the 1731 Courthouse and began a century long program of preservation of the historic buildings on Eastvilleβs Court Green in partnership with the County of Northampton. The mission of the NHPS is to preserve the historic heritage of properties primarily in Northampton County, through education, advocacy, and restoration activities.
The Eastern Shore of Virginia Community Foundation is a leading community organization supporting non-profits to develop a thriving Eastern Shore of Virginia community by connecting people with the causes they care about, including education, the arts, and human services.
