NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. — The Northampton County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to request a reduced speed limit on a portion of U.S. Route 13, asking the state to lower the limit to 35 mph along a 2.5-mile stretch of the highway.
The proposed reduction would apply from the intersection of Cherrystone Road to an area near the southern point at Kiptopeke Elementary School. The request will be reviewed by the Virginia Department of Transportation, which has final authority over speed limits on state-maintained roads.
If approved, the change would establish the lowest posted speed limit on U.S. Route 13 anywhere on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Route 13 serves as the region’s primary north-south traffic artery, carrying both local and through traffic.
County officials noted that the lower speed limit could also allow certain low-speed vehicles to operate legally on the highway. These vehicles, which resemble golf carts, are permitted on roads with posted speeds of 35 mph or less unless specifically prohibited. To qualify, the vehicles must meet safety requirements, including the presence of a windshield, speedometer and other required equipment.
The supervisors’ action sends a formal request to VDOT, which will conduct its own analysis before determining whether to approve the speed limit change.

Stupidest damn thing I’ve ever heard. That’s some cape charles fat cat bull$#!+ for ya right there. We dont need lower speed limits and sure as hell don’t need golf carts on the highways. What we need are better damn drivers. All you wanna do is slow the speed down and add more traffic to have more reason to build your stupid clover leaf. Take your city $#!+ and city folk back where you came from. We dont want or need it here.
Golf carts aren’t allowed on highways so there is nothing to worry about.
