Art imitates life and vice versa. Some of the greatest works in literature turned out to predict major events throughout the history. It is important not to forget that well known authors decide to write their novels after being inspired by the society of some era.
When discussing the relationship between society and art, it is impossible to neglect the connection between George Orwell’s most famous work “1984” and society today. In fact, the book and our environment nowadays can be compared in more ways than one, which is the primary purpose of this essay. George Orwell successfully played the role of Nostradamus and wrote a book that perfectly depicts the world we live in today.
In George Orwell’s famous novel, almost all private and public places feature large TV screens that only broadcast government propaganda, news, and of course, the approved entertainment. At the same time, these large screens are two-way monitors which spy on people’s private lives. Nowadays, we have easy access to media which, also, aims to display government propaganda, news, and entertainment.
Although we try to convince ourselves thinking entertainment today is largely “free”, that is not the case. Social media websites such as Facebook track our likes, dislikes, even messages.
The surveillance spreads to other websites we use daily. We may not have a two-way screen that tracks our every move, but there are multiple ways to get spied on and it is impossible to escape.
The similarities between George Orwell’s book and modern society also stretch to the endless global war. The novel describes a global war that has been going on since forever and shows no signs of slowing down. Moreover, the main hero, Winston Smith, realizes that enemy keeps changing. Things are not much different war-wise.
The United States fight wars for decades, with differing minor nations, along with Russia, Turkey, The United Kingdom, France, and many others. The so-called war on terror has no end in sight and its only “accomplishment” is spreading fear among the American public.
Furthermore, the key way Big Brother gained the tremendous power was through mind manipulation of the people. Big Brother erased history, changed facts, and rewrote past in a bid to favor a communist agenda.
Winston Churchill said: “History is written by the victors.” The quote perfectly describes the past, present, and the future. Those in power, i.e. victors, have the ability to not only rule in present but to “rewrite” what happened before. If we were to ask any historian or even students, whose major is history, they would instantly name all those times certain historical facts were rewritten just to conform someone’s political agenda.
Orwell’s 1984 is more than a brilliant work of art and one of the most important works in the literature. One can easily compare the book with reality, today’s modern society in numerous ways and this essay just outlined some of them. This just goes to show that art and life do go together hand in hand and there is plenty to learn from Mr. Orwell.
The sad and HUGE difference between Orwell’s 1984 when I first read it in school 53 years ago and now ? Well, back then it was so much bizarre but possible theories that one could fear and imagine off in the very distant future. Now it looks like a diary for 21st century American life.
Drown Alexa and completely deactivate any and all your voice remotes. They are never “off”. Turn off locator in your computer. Do not connect any t.v’s to the internet. Or don’t listen to me. I’m just a paranoid old poop looking for privacy ? An impossible goal now ? But Big Brother sees a lot more when he can listen. He will subtly and not so subtly invade your life.
Is there a Lane on The Shore where I can buy a house and NOT be on Google maps ? If I find it I’ll let you know Wayne. Last stand ?
MJM, you’re spot on. Just look at what’s happened since biden’s been in the WH.
Nah, He is a Mental Midget.
I really don’t get why everyone is so bent out of shape over Alexa recording you….if you aren’t committing any crimes then you have no reason to be afraid
I’ve heard that before, that if you aren’t committing any crimes then you have no reason to be afraid.
But when the concept of “crime” is very fluid and flexible as it is in America right now in fact, where who can be a criminal depends on who the person is, not that they even had to do something to be charged with having done something, while other people who did something a normal person would think was a criminal act, but doesn’t get charged with anything, because of who they are, how is one to know what “criminal” is or is not, and which side of that equation Siri really is on, and who she is reporting her information to.
The same goes for Alexa.
Who is she, really?
What’s her agenda?”
Then you are part of The Problem.
In the meantime, the inescapable fact remains that we ourselves are now fully over into the world Orwell depicted in 1984, which is a statement about people in America today who accept that world as their lot in life and make themselves comfortable in it.
Look at Winston Smith himself as a prime example of what I am talking about.
He works as a clerk in the Records Department of the Ministry of Truth, where his job is to rewrite historical documents so they match the constantly changing current party line, which work involves revising newspaper articles and doctoring photographs—mostly to remove “unpersons”, people who have fallen afoul of the party.
What kind of person could actually do a job like that, and not question anything about it?
Getting back to the book, because of his proximity to the mechanics of rewriting history, Winston Smith nurses doubts about the Party and its monopoly on truth.
But he is one of the only ones to do so.
Then Winston meets a mysterious woman named Julia, a fellow member of the Outer Party who also bears resentment toward the party’s ways and the two become lovers.
Winston soon gets in touch with O’Brien, a member of the Inner Party whom Winston believes is secretly a member of The Brotherhood, a resistance organisation dedicated to overthrowing the Party’s dictatorship.
So everyone is not a Kool-Aid drinker, anyway.
Believing they have met a kindred spirit, Winston and Julia join the Brotherhood, but O’Brien is really an agent of the Thought Police, which has had Winston under surveillance for seven years.
Winston and Julia are soon captured and Winston remains defiant when he is captured, and endures several months of extreme torture at O’Brien’s hands.
However, his spirit finally breaks when he is taken into Room 101 and confronted by his worst fear: the unspeakable horror of slowly being eaten alive by rats.
Terrified by the realisation that this threat will come true if he continues to resist, he denounces Julia and pledges his loyalty to the Party.
Any possibility of resistance or independent thought is destroyed when Smith is forced to accept the assertion 2 + 2 = 5, a phrase which has entered the lexicon to represent obedience to ideology over rational truth or fact.
There is really where the focus should be – how many people in our times today literally and meekly accept the assertion that 2+2 does in fact equal five, precisely because they are obedient to ideology over rational truth or fact, because obedience to ideology is so easy, while obedience to rational truth or fact is so hard, because it requires independent thought.
Getting back to the book, by the end of the novel, O’Brien’s torture has reverted Winston to an obedient, unquestioning party member who genuinely loves “Big Brother”.
The future is now.
Global warming is the 2+2=5 quandary. In the 40/50s it was global cooling. 80s acid rain. 90/00s global warming. Now it is climate change.
If one bothers to “follow the science,” in this case such scientific works as “Worlds in the Making – The Evolution of the Universe” by Svante Arrhenius, Director of the Physico-Chemical Nobel Institute, Stockholm, copyright, 1908,
or “Climate, History and the Modern World,” Second Edition, by H.H. Lamb, Emeritus Professor in the School of Environmental Sciences and the Founder and first Director of the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, one realizes that the climate of the earth has always been changing and has never been what could be called “constant”:
PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
Since this book was published in 1982 its subject has been continually in the limelight and research has been active.
Also, as is by no means unusual, further noteworthy weather events have been in the news.
Some additional reports, remarks and comments have therefore become desirable, yet the main body of past historical work is still not well known.
It has therefore been decided to issue this revised text which incorporates notices of much new, important, material, thus making our knowledge of the past — particularly the interactions between climate and history — more accessible and providing a handy introduction to some of the problems and results of ongoing research.
Some of the climatic problems affecting humanity arise perhaps more fundamentally from the pressures of the burgeoning human population of the world than from climate.
But climate has been the trigger — repeatedly in recent years — for natural disasters such as famines in Africa and typhoon floods killing large numbers in Bangladesh.
The wars in Iran and Iraq as well as some of the outbreaks of violence in Korea, China, Vietnam and Cambodia a few years earlier may usefully be considered in relation to climate as well as man-made stresses.
Anxieties about the possibility of drastic warming of world climates resulting from the continual build-up of carbon dioxide (and other intrusions) in the atmosphere due to human activities have been forced upon the notice of politicians and industrial managements.
Even more urgently the discovery of serious damage to the protective ozone layer in the stratosphere, exposing us all to lethal amounts of the sun’s ultra-violet radiation, demands attention, including some reversal of widely popular human habits.
In these years there has also been a succession of very great volcanic eruptions that have loaded the atmosphere with debris and, perhaps more importantly, with gases and vapours that veil the sun’s radiation and may be interrupting or even reversing the tendencies towards warming of world climates.
One eruption, that of Mount St Helens in 1980 in the western USA, has forced us to note how limited must be the usefulness of applying statistically based rules of thumb connecting measures of the magnitude of any eruption with the climatic effect: for the main thrust of ejected material on that occasion was nearly horizontally, very much less being directed to the stratosphere.
There have been very notable advances in these years in weather forecasting by mathematical models, enormously improving the forecasting for up to five to seven days ahead.
But much of the gain is jeopardized by modern tendencies to use sloppy and inappropriate language in forecasts.
Thus, it is now fashionable to speak of ‘best temperatures’ in forecasts rather than ‘highest’ or ‘lowest’ whichever may really be best for the activities in prospect.
And forecasters in southern England seem to like to assume that summer temperatures in England are much the same as in the Mediterranean, or if they are not, they should be and it is a bad year.
The idea of climatic change has at last taken on with the public, after generations which assumed that climate could be taken as constant.
But it is easy to notice the common assumption that Man’s science and modern industry and technology are now so powerful that any change of climate or the environment must be due to us.
It is good for us to be more alert and responsible in our treatment of the environment, but not to have a distorted view of our own importance.
Above all, we need more knowledge, education and understanding in these matters.
H.H. Lamb, Norfolk December 1994
I think the “power” of “1984” was not the story so much as the concepts the story, written by a Brit in England based on his experiences in England, introduced to us in this country to have to ponder and consider, as in, “could these things really exist,” and “could they exist here?”
Would a supposedly “free” people like the people of America are rumored to be submit themselves to such things in their lives, or allow them to enter into this country?
And the answer is of course they would and like Winston Smith, in the end, they too would be in love with BIG BROTHER, because people want to be safe, even if they have to be slaves to be so.
Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950), known by his pen name George Orwell, an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic whose work is characterised by lucid prose, biting social criticism, opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism, lived through times most people in this country today cannot even conceive of, WWI, the depression, and then WWII, times when government censorship was rampant.
But getting back to concepts, we have the Ministry of Truth (Newspeak: Minitrue), where Winston Smith works, which is really the ministry of propaganda.
As with the other ministries in the novel, the name Ministry of Truth is a misnomer because in reality it serves the opposite: it is responsible for any necessary falsification of historical events, something which is happening big time in the sorry nation today as our history is edited and re-edited with chunks being discarded while other parts are revised to make villains out of those who were once considered heroes.
However, like the other ministries in “1984,” the name is also apt because it decides what “truth” is in Oceania.
Those of us who lived through the VEET NAM times back in the day and age of Democrat Lyndon Baines Johnson know very well that yes, in this country we have a Ministry of Truth, as well, which decides what “truth” is going to be here in the USA, and of course, FACEBOOK is a big part of that ministry now, along with such stalwarts as the New York Times and the Washington Post.
Getting back to the book, in “1984,” as well as administering “truth”, the ministry spreads a new language amongst the populace called Newspeak, in which, for example, “truth” is understood to mean statements like 2 + 2 = 5 when the situation warrants.
In keeping with the concept of doublethink, the ministry is thus aptly named in that it creates/manufactures “truth” in the Newspeak sense of the word.
The book describes the doctoring of historical records to show a government-approved version of events.
Could that happen here?
It already has!
Let’s see ….
SLAVERY is the road to FREEDOM!
No, too long, too hard to remember …
(scratch scratch scratch)
To be FREE be a SLAVE!
Hmmm, no, still too much to think about …
(more scratching out)
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY!
Close, but not quite there yet …
(scratch scratch scratch)
Ah, yes, why didn’t I think of this before …
SLAVERY IS FREEDOM FROM EVERYTHING!
There we have it!
The American people should buy into that readily enough, and if they don’t?
Well, they’ll deserve what will be coming to them when the Thought Police catch up to them and send them to Room 101 for some much needed re-education!
That’ll fix them, alright.
In the story of Nineteen Eighty-Four, the Thinkpol (Thought Police) are responsible for the detection and elimination of thoughtcrime, and for the social control of the populations of Oceania, by way of audio-visual surveillance and offender profiling.
Such psychological monitoring allows the Thought Police to detect, arrest, and kill thought criminals, citizens whose independence (intellectual, mental, and moral) challenges the political orthodoxy of Ingsoc (English Socialism) and thus the legitimate government authority of the Party.
Now we have FACEBOOK fulfilling that function of hunting down those whose intellectual, mental, and moral independence challenges the political orthodoxy FACEBOOK is trying to impose on us, and it kills them off by simply denying them a voice.
And we cannot talk about thoughtcrime, something that many who post in here could very well likely be guilty of, without also speaking about crimestop, which word denotes the citizen’s self-awareness to immediately rid themselves of unwanted, incorrect thoughts (personal and political), the discovery of which, by the Thinkpol, would lead to detection and arrest, transport to and interrogation at the Miniluv (Ministry of Love).
By engaging constantly and assiduously practicing crimestop today, not only will you find yourself allowed to post on FACEBOOK, but you will find people like what you are posting, as well in what is in actuality a “thoughtcrime-free zone,” because the THOUGHT POLICE at FACEBOOK won’t allow it to be any other way.
As to crimestop, Winston Smith, describes it as a conscious process of self-imposed cognitive dissonance, which is what we all should be taking notice of in here if we want to be able to post on FACEBOOK and get a lot of likes, to wit:
“The mind should develop a blind spot whenever a dangerous thought presented itself.”
“The process should be automatic, instinctive.”
So he set an example for us to follow by exercising himself in crimestop by presenting himself with propositions — ‘the Party says the Earth is flat’, ‘the Party says that ice is heavier than water’ — and trained himself in not seeing or not understanding the arguments that contradicted them.
That, people, is the iron self-discipline FACEBOOK demands of each and everyone of us, if we too aspire to be able to post on FACEBOOK and be liked for what we say.
From the perspective of Oceania’s principal enemy of the state, in the history book The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism, however, Emmanuel Goldstein added to that sage advice, as follows:
“Crimestop means the faculty of stopping short, as though by instinct, at the threshold of any dangerous thought.”
“It includes the power of not grasping analogies, of failing to perceive logical errors, of misunderstanding the simplest arguments if they are inimical to Ingsoc, and of being bored or repelled by any train of thought which is capable of leading in a heretical direction.”
“Crimestop, in short, means protective stupidity.”
Boy, does it ever, but hey, if you want to be liked on FACEBOOK …..
We should perhaps consider the fact that “Nineteen Eighty-Four: A Novel” by English novelist George Orwell was published 71 years ago now on 8 June 1949 and it centers on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of persons and behaviors within society.
Orwell, himself a democratic socialist, modelled the authoritarian government in the novel after Stalinist Russia, and more broadly, the novel examines the role of truth and facts within politics and the ways in which they are manipulated, which is a statement about where we are in this country today, where more and more, we resemble Stalinist Russia.
The story takes place in an imagined future, the year 1984, when much of the world has fallen victim to perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, historical negationism, and propaganda.
It could well be re-titled “2020.”

Paul Plante left six of the seven comments?
Are you sure?
Did you count them twice to confirm what you are saying?
And why did you bother?
Are you obsessed with how many posts Paul Plante makes?
Or are you fascinated?
And outside of you, who cares?
And why would they care?
And did you ever stop to consider that nothing Paul Plante posts could make it here as a post unless it passed muster with the Editor/Publisher?
So could it be that Paul Plante was thought to have something of value to say on the subject, and so did pass muster?
Are you then complaining about the editorial policy that allows Paul Plante to be published seven times in a row in the Cape Charles Mirror?
Should Paul Plante be allowed only one post?
Is that the policy you are pushing here, one of censorship, with you as the censor?
Maybe the site should be renamed the Paul Plante Bully Pulpit. There isn’t a topic that he isn’t an expert on!
Note: Mr. Plante has been contributing to this site from almost its beginnings, going on his 7th year. He got it, way back when.
Maybe when you have your own site you will be able to rename it.
You go, Stuart Bell!
Do you realize how absolutely STOOPID, moronic, ignorant and brain-dead you sound there, J Wheaton, given that the CAPE CHARLES MIRROR allows you to post here?
In our language in this country, a language you apparently never learned given your ridiculous comment above, a BULLY PULPIT is defined thusly (and we’re talking sixth grade level comprehension here, people): a public office or position of authority that provides its occupant with an outstanding opportunity to speak out on any issue.
Given that the CAPE CHARLES MIRROR is not an ORGAN OF STATE PROPAGANDA, and given that I am not holding a public office in here as is say, congresswoman Luria, who does use this as a BULLY PULPIT, and quite well, actually, it is patently STOOPID to call it the “Paul Plante Bully Pulpit.”
And notice, people, just how upset, almost puce with rage, in fact, this J Wheaton got with his or her post above here where he or she said, “There isn’t a topic that he isn’t an expert on!”
How that absolutely frosts he or she!
WHY?
Is it because he or she is a promoter of GROSS IGNORANCE and BENIGHTED STUPIDITY in this nation?
Why does it bother he or she so much that I have applied myself as an AMERICAN CITIZEN to learn something about the world I am a part of, and its history?
Why does that scare he or she?
An existential question for our times along with the other question of is Joe Biden a pathological liar, or not?
Reply
I become more and more convinced by the day that we are all stuck in some kind of absurdist drama version of Orwell’s “1984” meets Camus and Mel Brooks and the Three Stooges, with us all as simply actors on the stage, each writing their own part, something like a corollary of the 500 monkeys in a room with computers who can flawlessly reproduce Shakespeare time after time after time, with Joe Biden’s own Jen Psaki as “BIG BROTHER” while Joe Biden is Mr. Thompson from Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged” with Nancy Pelosi as “Kip’s Mom” and Charley “Chuck” Schumer as an amalgamation of Balf Eubank. Kip Chalmers, Cuffy Meigs, and Tinky Holloway, which makes for a very surreal combination indeed!
Wake up People!

Compare George Orwell’s 1984 to Society Today?
Hmmmm.
That’s a no-brainer – they are the same.

“Economists rip White House for economic ‘spin’: ‘Actively making the problem worse'”
Thomas Catenacci
24 October 2022
FIRST ON FOX: Economic policy experts criticized the White House on Monday for attempting to spin the latest economic indicators despite rising inflation and widespread consumer angst.
“The rhetoric coming out of the White House has become so Orwellian that you are — much like Orwell’s Ministry of Truth — it is much more likely to be completely devoid of truth than to even have a kernel of truth in it,” Heritage Foundation research fellow E.J. Antoni told FOX Business.
Fox Business News
“New GDP number not nearly as positive as Biden White House’s spin. Here’s why”
E.J. Antoni
27 October 2022
The third quarter GDP report does not show a stronger consumer or a healthy business climate.
Rather, consumer expenditures grew at an anemic 1.4% and business investment fell for the second quarter in a row, dropping 8.5%.
Although the headline GDP number is positive for the third quarter, it does not reflect an improvement in the life of the common man, contrary to the White House’s rhetoric.
The average American’s finances continue to deteriorate under the current administration.
When Biden took office, the economic recovery already underway was growing at an annualized rate of $1.5 trillion and inflation was just 1.4%.
In less than two years, Biden has delivered consecutive quarters of negative economic growth and managed to drive inflation so high that prices rose nearly as fast in a single month as they did in the entire year before he became president.
For American families, this has been devastating.
Real disposable income is down 12% under Biden and the average worker has lost the equivalent of $3,000 in annual pay because prices have risen so much faster than wages.
Higher interest rates add insult to injury, inflicting another $1,200 per year on average in higher borrowing costs.
But that’s just the average.
If you get a mortgage on a median-priced home today, it will cost you $10,000 more per year than when Biden took office.
That’s $300,000 more over the life of the loan — for the same house.
It’s no wonder homeownership affordability has dropped 33% under Biden.
Savers have also been devastated by Biden’s inflationary and anti-growth policies.
The average 401(k) has lost 25% of its value in 2022, about $34,000 per person and $68,000 per couple.
With prices rising so fast, many people are unable to save at all and are instead relying on credit cards to make ends meet.
Monthly savings have plummeted 83% under Biden while credit card debt is up 23%.
Sadly, there is little relief in sight coming from the Biden administration, which has only doubled down on failures like its anti-energy agenda, policies that already produced the highest gasoline and diesel prices in the nation’s history.
With winter around the corner, there is even the risk of a home-heating-oil shortage.
Instead of reversing course, as the Clinton administration did in the 1990s, the Biden administration seems content to hang its hat on Orwellian word games.
Yet just because the White House redefines the word “recession” doesn’t mean families are immune to the financial reality that they cannot afford to live in Biden’s America.
Janet “TOODLES” Yellen, Joe Biden’s treasury secretary, is also fulfilling the role of “BIG BROTHER” in Joe Biden’s surveillance state:

“U.S. Treasury Yellen: Twitter should be held to certain standards for content”
By David Lawder
November 30, 2022
NEW YORK, Nov 30 (Reuters) – U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Wednesday said social media company Twitter should be held to certain standards for content, arguing that it is “not that different” from radio stations and broadcasters subject to such rules.
“I’m not going to say specifically what we are or aren’t looking at,” Yellen said.
“We don’t comment on work that’s in progress.”
Yellen said she believed it was appropriate for mobile technology giants Apple and Google to demand certain content standards.
“I think it’s a good thing, if Apple is looking at the content.”
“Most broadcast stations are subjected to standards in terms of what they broadcast to the public.”
“And Twitter’s not really that different than other broadcast stations,” Yellen said.
Asked if it was good that such platforms were overseeing content, Yellen said, “It’s a kind of control that I think is needed.”
It is about control, afterall!
And there is never enough of it to keep society in line!
We need more of it!
Then everything will be good all the time and everybody will be happy all the time.
For those few of you who CAN handle truth, backed up by verifiable data/facts, go to https://warroom.org Monday-Friday 10 to 12am and 5 to 7pm, and Saturday 10 to 12am. The information presented there is not for the faint of heart. For those who eagerly anticipate and accept that 2+2 = whatever they are told to believe; don’t bother, the information must be well beyond your comprehension.
Wow, A Friend!
Don’t you think that for you to assume that the information you are able to comprehend must be well beyond the comprehension of most people makes you quite the arrogant man/woman/she/her/they/them, n’est-ce pas?
On another more relevant note, according to a Fox News article titled “DHS agency appears to be ‘burying’ evidence of involvement with ‘domestic censorship activities’: expert” by Aaron Kliegman on 7 March 2023, “BIG BROTHER” is definitely among us, and “MIND CONTROL THROUGH CENSORSHIP” is the order of the day, to wit:
A federal agency in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that’s been scrutinized for what critics argue is suppression of dissenting political views under the guise of combating disinformation now appears to be “burying” evidence of its alleged censorship, experts and watchdog groups say.
end quotes
But, seriously people, isn’t that really the right thing for them to do, to keep us from getting confused by these dissenters who are just, well you know, disgruntled, and anyway, they hate our DEMOCRACY, so they should be silenced to protect us, uh, somebody help me out here, shouldn’t they?
Going back to the reality of STATE CENSORSHIP and MIND CONTROL that now exists in the United States of America with the DICTATORIAL Biden Regime firmly in power, we have, to wit:
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, or CISA, has come under fire for working with Big Tech companies to flag and take down social media posts related to elections, COVID vaccines, and a range of other issues that were deemed mis-, dis-, and malinformation (MDM).
end quotes
But they are trying to protect us, people, so shouldn’t they be getting praised, instead, to wit:
In a statement to Fox News Digital, however, CISA denied ever conducting censorship of Americans and said the changes to its website were part of a broader redesign.
“CISA does not and has never censored domestic political speech,” said an agency spokesperson.
“As part of a recent redesign of CISA.gov, we clarified language describing CISA’s work on foreign influence operations and disinformation related to the security and administration of elections.”
“CISA provides broad information on disinformation tactics, mitigates the risk of disinformation by sharing accurate information, and amplifies the voices of state and local election offices.”
end quotes
See what I am saying, people?
They help us to be good people by mitigating the risk of us being swept away by disinformation by sharing with us the real-deal accurate information, instead, because when it comes to knowing what is accurate information versus disinformation, ONLY THE JOE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION CAN BE TRUSTED!

The Biden administration will disguise agents as students to catch colleges and universities that are misleading students, according to the announcement, the Department of Education (DOE) announced on Tuesday.
The Enforcement Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) will use “secret shoppers” to ensure that higher education institutions are complying with federal laws regarding financial aid, recruitment and enrollment and that they are not misleading or preying on students, the announcement reads.
The agents, posed as students at the institutions, will identify any “misrepresentations” in several aspects that colleges and universities advertise to recruit and retain students including “transferability of credits, job placement rates, completion and withdrawal rates, graduates’ future earning potential, career services, the cost of attendance, the amount of federal student aid, and accreditation status.”
“Secret shopping is another tool in FSA’s toolbox as we expand our oversight work to hold predatory schools accountable,” FSA Chief Operating Officer Richard Cordray said in the announcement.
“Our focus—as always—is to ensure that students, borrowers, families, and taxpayers are not being preyed upon to make a quick buck.”
Colleges and universities that “treat current and prospective students fairly and act lawfully have nothing to fear from secret shopping,” according to Kristen Donoghue, FSA’s chief enforcement officer.
Schools that mislead students are “on notice” that the department may be aware and “they should clean up accordingly.”
The announcement furthers the Biden administration’s commitment to going after colleges and universities that deceive students, but Career Education Colleges and Universities (CECU), the “national association representing the proprietary sector of higher education,” is worried that the secret shopper approach could be too partisan.
“We support reasonable practices that hold all institutions accountable for misrepresentations that financially harm students and taxpayers; however, the federal government has a track record of using secret shopper investigations to malign politically unfavored institutions with distorted findings that later result in the need for public correction,” Nicholas Kent, CECU’s chief policy officer, wrote in response to Tuesday’s announcement which was sent to the Daily Caller News Foundation.
“Given the current administration’s animus toward for-profit institutions, we are concerned this self-proclaimed ‘tool’ will be used as a weapon to inflict further damage upon private career schools and limit student choice.”
Kent referenced a 2010 Government Accountability Office report which concluded that 15 for-profit colleges “deceptive or otherwise questionable statements to GAO’s undercover applicants,” according to the report.
It was later revised after industry members and Republicans in Congress filed complaints that the report exaggerated exchanges between the colleges and the undercover students, Times Higher Education reported.
Lawmakers sent a letter, which cited the Daily Caller, to the GOA requesting several answers to questions about its “methodology in preparing and revising” the report, according to a copy obtained by the DCNF.
The agents’ findings will either be evidence in an ongoing investigation or be used to open a new one against a college or university, according to the DOE’s announcement.
The FSA will refer the findings to law enforcement offices or departments at the state and federal levels if necessary.
The DOE referred the DCNF to the press release.

The Daily Caller
“CLANCY: Biden’s 2020 Conspiracy Of ‘Carefully Constructed Lies’”
Opinion by Michael Clancy
23 April 2023
“Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful” – George Orwell
George Orwell in his acclaimed dystopian novel 1984 conceived a fictional government of “Big Brother,” a “Ministry of Truth,” and “doublethink” dedicated to reality control and conscious deception.
He warned of a government “telling carefully constructed lies” as political truth.
Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign proved Orwell to be incredibly prescient.
Fifty-one (“the 51”) former national security and intelligence officials conspired to ignite a disinformation campaign dedicated to electing Biden.
Their objective was to mislead the voters by falsely discrediting the New York Post’s shocking and completely accurate revelations of then Vice President Biden’s direct connection to his son Hunter’s questionable, if not corrupt, international business dealings through their infamous “Public Statement on the Hunter Biden Emails.”
Now, we have learned from a House Judiciary Committee investigation that this conspiracy of disinformation was likely instigated by Biden campaign operatives.
Brandishing their national security and intelligence credentials, the 51 claimed — with no evidence whatsoever — that the New York Post’s story had “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.”
They then fed that narrative to the press leading to Politico’s definitive declaration, Hunter Biden story is Russian disinfo, dozens of former intel officials say.
As Biden himself echoed the same message in the final presidential debate, the liberal press and social media dutifully played along relentlessly repeating the false Russian narrative, and suppressing the New York Post’s story.
Republicans, in control of the House Judiciary Committee since the 2022 election, rightfully launched an investigation.
In a recent press release, the Committee disclosed that new testimony by Michael Morell, a former Deputy Director of the CIA and one of the 51 signatories of the “Public Statement,” revealed that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, then senior advisor to the Biden campaign, was the impetus of the “Public Statement.”
Morrell testified that he had no intent of writing the statement before being contacted by Blinken, that Blinken’s contact “triggered” the statement, and that the intent of the “Public Statement” was to “help Vice President Biden …. win the election.”
Multiple polls indicate that this disinformation campaign achieved the intended result.
This conspiracy of the Biden campaign acting in collusion with our country’s national security and intelligence officials is Orwell’s “doublethink” in action to subvert a presidential election.
In 2020, these national security and intelligence officials — including a former secretary of defense, and a number of former directors of National Intelligence, the CIA and NSA — weighed in on a presidential election.
While certainly these former officials as private citizens have the right of free speech, they were not in this instance speaking purely as private citizens.
The vast majority of them, if not all, continue to maintain their security clearances after leaving their government positions in order to continue to advise Congress, DOD, and the intelligence agencies informally and formally through intelligence advisory committees.
In seeding doubt on the legitimacy of the Hunter emails, they leveraged their unique positions, titles, and access to classified information to claim knowledge of “Russian overt and covert activities,” to know “Russian behavior intimately,” and to cloak their statement on the Hunter emails with credibility.
There was, however, no evidence of Russian involvement; and it is well known that such a claim is unequivocally false.
Yet, the lie became the prevailing narrative.
It was a breach of trust for these former senior national security and intelligence officials to leverage their government security clearance credentials in collusion with the Biden campaign to conceal evidence of Biden’s corruption.
Given their unique positions, they owe loyalty to our Constitution, our nation, and to free and fair elections that transcends their personal feelings about any particular candidate.
Given the egregious misconduct of these 51 officials, Congress must act to redress their wrongdoing and to protect future elections.
Regarding the 51, their security clearances and participation on government advisory committees should be revoked.
Further, there should be an investigation on whether there is a basis to revoke their government pensions.
Going forward, Congress should consider legislation to curtail such activity in the future.
Our elections must be free from a conspiracy of “carefully constructed lies”; and free from being hijacked by our nation’s national security and intelligence complex colluding with a presidential campaign.
In America today, it is smart to be stupid, it is intelligent to be ignorant, it is honest to be dishonest, the fact that it is freezing means it’s warming, and all of Joe Biden’s lies are the truth.
A sure sign that GLOBAL WARMING is getting worse is having to go out on an April morning like I did this morning and yesterday as well to scrape ice off your windshield.
That’s how you can tell GLOBAL WARMING is getting really bad!
In “1984,” just as there is in the Biden administration, there is a Ministry of Truth, which like Joe Biden’s Ministry of Truth, is really the Ministry of Propaganda.
In both cases, the Ministry of Truth is responsible for any necessary falsification of historical events.
As well as administering “truth”, the ministry spreads a new language amongst the populace called Newspeak, in which, for example, “truth” is understood to mean statements like 2 + 2 = 5 when the situation warrants.
In keeping with the concept of doublethink, the ministry is thus aptly named in that it creates/manufactures “truth” in the Newspeak sense of the word.
In 1984, the book describes the doctoring of historical records to show a government-approved version of events, and in an article in The Hill titled “Joe Biden’s ‘Ministry of Truth’” by Joe Concha on 05/01/22, we find the Biden admi9onistration doing the exact same thing, to wit:
The Biden administration’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced this week that it has launched what is being dubbed a Disinformation Governance Board to combat “misinformation.”
The person chosen to lead this new “Committee of Public Information” under Mayorkas is Nina Jankowicz, who calls herself “a disinformation fellow” and a Russian disinformation expert.
Here’s what Mayorkas’s choice to helm Biden’s “Ministry of Truth” once said about Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop, which many on the left and in the media dubbed as Russian disinformation in the weeks before the 2020 election.
“We should view it as a Trump campaign product,” Jankowicz said of the story at the time.
“Not to mention that the emails don’t need to be altered to be part of an influence campaign.”
“Voters deserve that context, not a [fairy] tale about a laptop repair shop,” she also tweeted in October 2020.

Yes, people, Joe Biden’s Ministry of Truth is indeed responsible for any necessary falsification of historical events, and there we had a case of it right above here.
As is the case in the novel “1984,” Joe Biden’s Ministry of Truth is involved with news media, entertainment, the fine arts and educational books, and as we saw above, its purpose is to rewrite history to change the facts to fit Democrat Party doctrine for propaganda effect, so that if Big Brother Joe Biden makes a prediction that turns out to be wrong, the employees of the Ministry of Truth correct the record to make it accurate, which is the “how” of the Ministry of Truth’s existence.
As in the novel, the deeper reason for the existence of Joe Biden’s Ministry of Truth, the “why”, is to maintain the illusion that the Democrat Party is absolute, because to maintain power the Democrat Party must seem eternally right and strong.
And as in the novel, in real life, Minitrue plays a role by changing history, and changing the words in articles about events current and past, so that Big Brother Joe Biden and his government are always seen in a good light and can never do any wrong, and in both cases, the content is more propaganda than actual news.
Which brings us to an OK! Magazine article titled “White House Confession in Leaked Memo About Biden Cash Scandal” by Aaron Johnson on 25 May 2023, where we have as follows:
House Republicans, led by Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, are “admitting” to probing into President Joe Biden’s family finances as an attempt to damage his reputation, according to a memo obtained by NBC News.
“Extreme MAGA House Republicans are being caught doing something they rarely do: telling the truth,” White House spokesperson Ian Sams said.
“They are admitting through their own words and deeds that these so-called ‘investigations’ are actually intended not to reveal facts but to hurt the President’s political standing.”

And isn’t he really something, people, Joe Biden’s political propagandist Ian Sams who in an online EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS ON WHITE HOUSE OFFICE PERSONNEL as of Date: Friday, July 1, 2022, was listed as follows:
SAMS, IAN C. EMPLOYEE $110,000 Per Annum SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT AND SENIOR ADVISOR TO THE WHITE HOUSE COUNSEL

Not at all bad money, people, is it for telling bald-faced lies to the American people to combat the truth about Joe Biden, so you parents out there teaching your children to be truthful and forthright should consider that maybe you are taking them in the wrong direction, because as Ian Sams makes clear here, in Democrat politics, anyway, the BIG BUCK$ go to the accomplished liars like Ian, not to truth-tellers, and as to his qualifications to be a BIDEN PROPAGANDIST, on his Linked-in page, Joe’s spokesperson and defender Ian Sams describes himself as follows, to wit:
I am a communications professional and strategist, with experience conveying both political and policy objectives on the record for seven state and federal campaigns, including two presidential campaigns, the Democratic Party, in the U.S. Senate, and for the Biden Administration’s COVID response effort. I’ve spent a decade in the trenches of national politics and government — managing teams, media relations, message development, and candidate and principal training and prep. I have deep experience with strategic communications planning, rapid response, crisis communications, domestic policy messaging, and digital content.
We are a generous people here in the US who so dearly love being lied to by our public officials like Ian Sams that we actually reward them with lucrative salaries way beyond what we who are the recipients of the lies make ourselves.
I wonder what Orwell would think of us.
