The Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) is looking into a U.S. Navy report describing roughly 100 unidentified airborne objects, along with two likely uncrewed surface craft, spotted off the coast of Virginia. The incident is disclosed in AARO’s newly released Fiscal Year 2025 annual report on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP).
AARO, created in 2022 under a congressional mandate, is tasked with identifying and resolving UAP sightings that could pose security or safety risks — including the possibility that some sightings are advanced foreign drones or other next-generation technology. The office is required to submit an unclassified annual report to Congress, with a classified version attached.
Covering incidents from June 2024 through May 2025, the report tallies:
- 319 total UAP reports received during the period
- 284 from the current reporting year; 25 from 2010–2024 that hadn’t been logged before
- 114 reports resolved, mostly identified as balloons, birds, satellites, aircraft, drones, one rocket launch, and one jet pack
- 1,870 total cases in AARO’s active caseload as of May 2025
- 274 reports from the air domain, 44 from space, and just 1 from the maritime domain — the Virginia Navy sighting
The Virginia Incident
The report offers few details but confirms AARO is actively investigating the case with the unit that filed it. Officials also noted that some reports near sensitive military or infrastructure sites described phenomena that appeared to outperform known technology, though none included supporting technical data. Two other cases in the reporting period involved possible electronic interference with aircraft, which AARO has not yet linked conclusively to UAP.
AARO also brought a new 3D modeling and simulation tool online this year, which helped resolve 238 cases as satellite flaring — sunlight reflecting off satellites in a way that mimics anomalous sightings. The office says it’s investing further in sensor technology across the air, space, and maritime domains.
As in previous years, AARO reiterated that none of the cases it has resolved so far point to advanced foreign adversary technology or breakthrough capabilities.
Separately, the office says it’s developing formal procedures for handling any physical UAP-related materials that might come into government possession.
