Science and Philosophy Seminar of the Eastern Shore of Virginia has scheduled a seminar, “The American Civil War, Slavery, and Cotton.”. The free 90-minute seminar will be held at 10:30a.m. on Friday, February 16 in Room 148 of the Academic Building of Eastern Shore Community College, 29300 Lankford Hwy, Melfa, VA 23410.
Al McKegg will discuss the simple fiber from which almost all 19th century clothing was made, and the enormous wealth generated by the American slave system which grew that fiber, and drove our country to a disastrous civil war which echoes still.
McKegg, by trade a writer and musician, moved to the Shore a decade ago. He still writes; and when the wind is fair, sails.
These seminars are occasionally rescheduled on short notice. Prospective attendees are urged to check the Seminar’s website (www.SciPhi.org) shortly before a scheduled date.
Science and Philosophy Seminar is an informally organized group that meets more or less regularly to explore and discuss a wide array of topics, ranging from philosophical speculation to scientific research. All Seminars are open to the public. Admission is free.
