Rep. Luria’s Statement on Reports of the Supreme Court Overturning Roe v. Wade

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Today, Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA), released the following statement on a report that the Supreme Court of the United States intends to overturn Roe v. Wade:

“Roe v. Wade has been law since 1973, and I am deeply concerned by reports that the Supreme Court is poised to overturn this decision that protects a woman’s right to choose. If the leaked decision is made final, women across the country would be stripped of their constitutional rights to make choices about their own bodies. This is a decision to be made between a woman, her health care provider, and her faith—it is not the place of government to dictate a woman’s choices. Banning abortion does not stop abortions, it only prevents women from receiving safe health care and medical services that they need. I will continue to fight to protect the fundamental rights of all Americans.”

    Why do we silently watch our elected leaders in the executive branch, and many politicians serving in the legislative branch of our government to ignore the fact that the judicial branch’s Roe v. Wade was illegally approved by the Supreme Court? Our constitution has no mention of the right of abortion – “all powers not enumerated in the US Constitution shall be granted to the states.”
    And why do these same leaders who ignore the Constitution, also ignore the lack of ethics within the Supreme Court’s organization? Instead these leaders are speculating that if this draft decision is upheld, that abortion will be illegal and right-to-life activists will advocate for restrictions on other social issues such as gay marriage (the Supreme Court has ruled that gay marriage is legal). The “news” articles about these issues is actually opinion – the right-to-life organizations have not explicitly defined their position on their desire to advocate to expand restrictions – the press is positioning opinions as facts.
    Representative Luria is wrong when she implies that women must have a “federal” constitutional right to have an abortion – women need a legally-defensible right granted by a state or commonwealth. Virginia does not yet have a state law that allows abortion; why wouldn’t Representative Luria focus on “solving the problem” instead of joining the chorus? Has she forgotten that she represents Virginians, not the platform of her political party?

    Unfortunately
    Roe vs Wade allows the right of a woman to make thus choice . What about the other half . The males rights. A woman can choose to abort even if she is in a marital relationship and taken vows at that marriage. I do not agree that abortion should be outlawed in its entirety as there are reasonable reasons for one. Rape ( proven not fabricated) medical life threatening to the woman , and if in a marriage both parties agree to it .
    Roe vs Wade needs restructuring not abolishment .

      None. Because women were not even a consideration during the process that produced that document. I’m not surprised to see men cheering this decision but I find it deeply disturbing to see women support losing the right to control their own bodies.

        Sorin, that is pure and abolute horse**** that makes you sound like somebody from a benighted foreign country who has learned about America through movies, magazines, travel brochures and the weepy, distorted and warped history of Howard Zinn.

        And for you information, Sorin, so you won’t sound so ignorant in the future, as well as totally uninformed, native American women had herbs to induce abortion long before people from your country got here.

        Never was that a secret.

        In your country, women were treated like possessions and chattel and you are projecting that to here, as if we were the same as the place you came from.

        We’re not.

        Please don’t substitute the history of your country for that of our country, and please, do not feed us that tired Howard Zinn bull**** about women and their bodies.

        For your information, Sorin, because it is clear you didn’t really have to know this stuff when you got handed U.S. citizenship, a constitution, in this case our constitution is nothing more than a body of fundamental principles or established precedents according to which a state or other organization is acknowledged to be governed.

        That’s it, Sorin.

        Not only does OUR Constitution not mention women, but it also doesn’t mention men, nor should it.

        OUR Constitution over here, which again you apparently did not have to know about to get handed citizenship, is comprised of the following parts, to wit:

        Preamble

        Article I – Legislative Department
        Article II – Executive Department
        Article III – Judicial Department
        Article IV – States’ Relations
        Article V – Mode of Amendment
        Article VI – Prior Debts, National Supremacy and Oaths of Office
        Article VII – Ratification

        end quotes

        So where should a woman’s supposed right to kill an unborn child have been included?

        In the Preamble, so it would read “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America so as to protect the right of women to have abortions.”

        What’s your thoughts on the subject.

    It’s time get back to basics, no more giving away tax payers money away, for free health care to the public that does not work to keep the system going. We need a conservative.

    A Wo-Man can do anything she wants to her body…shoot heron, snort coke, cut herself 1000 times with a razor blade or smoke crack…even throw a speed-ball in for good measure. But what she can not do, is anything she wants with is the human being she in incubating in her womb.

    Thou Shalt Not Kill is pretty basic.

    You can not have half the population with a right to kill 11 or 12 human beings each year, while the other half goes to jail for the same thing.

    Some woman are Serial Killers…plain and simple.

    As to rape, incest or a baby with 5 heads, 7 feet and no brain….your doctor will help you work that out.

    There is nothing on Earth more disgusting than a wo-man killing babies, except for a wo-man defending their right to kill them.

    Sick people. Sick Society.
