Some closure was reached for the victim, her family, and the Town of Cape Charles itself as Frederick Baker, 16, of Cape Charles, pleaded guilty to rape, abduction and forcible sodomy.
Judge Revel Lewis sentenced Baker to 66 years for the sexual and firearm cases and 8 ½ more years for the offenses that occurred in the jail totaling 74 ½ years of incarceration with all but 34 ½ years suspended.
The crime occurred in 2015 when a young woman who was visiting family in Cape Charles was riding her bicycle in Central Park. Baker stopped her on the path, pulled out a .9 mm handgun and told her to get off her bike. He then led her into the park’s public bathroom where the assault took place. DNA evidence was used to determine Baker was the rapist.
Defense attorney Tucker Watson argued that Baker had been sexually abused by his mother. A therapist from North Spring mental institution in Leesburg also stated that he believed the defendant was scarred by his mother who had sexually abused him as a young child.
On July 21, 2016 Baker was convicted of the attempted rape his stepmother (he was 14). He is set to be sentenced on that charge next week in juvenile court.
