If you are one of the few still left working a job, and you think that you will be able to drop off your recycling at the Cheriton Center on the weekend, think again. Essentially, frustration and disappointment await as you encounter the consistent over-fullness of the recycling center-it is always closed due to overflow. If you are a citizen who genuinely cares about the environment, you have to shake your head at the negligence and lack of efficiency in managing such an essential facility.
Every weekend, and sometimes by Friday, the recycling center is consistently overflowing with recyclable materials. Every time I visit, I encounter the same sign--FULL. You can let the recycling mound up at your home, or you just throw it in the general trash container.
I understand that the recycling center has limited capacity and faces challenges in keeping up with the ever-increasing demand caused by the massive influx of vacationers. It is still unacceptable for a community like ours, so close to the water (on both sides), which prides itself on its environmental consciousness, to continuously fail in providing a functional and accessible recycling facility.
The constant overfullness discourages responsible citizens from actively participating in recycling efforts. We just give up and resort to throwing recyclables into regular trash bins, contributing to unnecessary waste and pollution.
Things we can do to improve the situation:
- Increase the frequency of collection: By scheduling more frequent pickups, you can prevent the recycling center from reaching full capacity and ensure that there is always space available for recyclables.
- Expand the facility: Evaluate the current capacity of the recycling center and consider expanding its size or establishing additional centers in the area. This would accommodate the growing demand and alleviate the strain on the existing facility.
These minor changes, at least increasing the number of pickups will significantly enhance the functionality and efficiency of our local recycling center.
Is it time for Northampton to finally walk the walk and show some dedication to environmental conservation?

Editor’s Note: This is true. I will sometimes hold the recycling if I know I have an errard near one of these…but the Cheriton facility is my local, only 3 minutes away.
It’s not just the recycling bins that are always full. I have also found all of the bulk waste bins to be blocked off with “FULL” signs on my last three visits.
You may have to do both . Using single and not multiple connected containers takes up more space . Try using multiple connected containers and add another row and pick up more frequently during the summer months .

I think about time the folks in charge, told me go to another recycling center. This is wrong for the Money the County collects from the Cape Charles area they should be able to do so much better then they are doing.
Amen! I recycle post-it notes (everything). It is so frustrating to cart it all back home.
It would look a lot better if someone would pick up the overflow trash that piles up on the fences, too. The other recycle areas are neat and clean.
They can not get the trash out of the ditches of The Shore, so why would they pick it up around trash dump?
I understand Charles Lewis Wilson had the one on the way to Saxis under complete control.
