NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (Eastern Shore Post) — The Eastern Shore Post reported this week that a Birdsnest farmer is asking for the public’s help after discovering that 10 heritage turkeys he had been raising for the holiday season were stolen earlier this month — a loss he says small agricultural businesses like his can hardly afford.
Thelonius Cook, owner of Mighty Thundercloud Edible Forest, said he found the turkeys missing on Nov. 3. The birds — Heritage Bronze turkeys weighing between 16 and 25 pounds — had been raised since July and were intended for Thanksgiving and Christmas sales. Cook said the theft delivered a serious financial blow at the very moment small farmers rely on seasonal income to stay afloat.
The turkeys are described as having bronze feathers with an iridescent sheen; some were marked with green leg bands.
Crimes targeting livestock and farm operations have become an increasing concern in rural communities, where thin profit margins, rising operating costs and limited law enforcement resources compound the harm. For small farmers like Cook, a single theft can wipe out months of investment in feed, labor and care — and disrupt the already fragile local food economy that many Eastern Shore residents depend on.
Local authorities are investigating the theft. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office.
