CAPE CHARLES, Va. β A kite surfer was safely rescued Tuesday after becoming distressed in the cold waters off Cape Charles Beach, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Officials with U.S. Coast Guard Station Cape Charles confirmed that the incident occurred Tuesday when a kite surfer experienced difficulty offshore. Before Coast Guard crews arrived, a nearby citizen stepped in to assist the individual.
A Coast Guard response team was launched shortly after the call was received. Crews then escorted both the kite surfer and the other individual safely back to Cape Charles Harbor.
The water temperature at the time of the incident was approximately 52 degrees, according to officials. Despite the cold conditions, authorities reported no injuries or medical concerns related to the event. The cause of the initial distress has not been confirmed.
Cold Water Risks Remain Even With Wetsuits
While kite surfing and other water sports remain popular year-round along the Eastern Shore, officials often caution that cold water conditions present serious risks, even for experienced participants wearing wetsuits.
According to safety experts, water temperatures below 60 degrees can quickly lead to:
- Cold water shock, which can cause rapid breathing and panic
- Loss of muscle control, making it difficult to swim or handle equipment
- Hypothermia, which can develop faster than many expect
- Equipment complications, particularly in windy winter conditions
Kite surfing, in particular, can become hazardous when winds shift suddenly, lines tangle, or equipment failsβconditions that are more challenging to manage in cold water.
The Coast Guard frequently advises winter water sport participants to:
- Wear appropriate cold-water gear, including gloves and booties
- Avoid going out alone
- Check wind and weather conditions carefully
- Carry a communication device when possible
- Stay within sight of shore or other people
The quick actions of the nearby citizen and the rapid Coast Guard response ensured a safe outcome.
The incident serves as a reminder that while Cape Charles offers excellent conditions for kite surfing and other water sports, cold-water safety remains critical during the winter and early spring months.
