WASHINGTON — In a significant move to broaden the pool of potential military recruits, the U.S. House Armed Services Committee has approved an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2025. This amendment, passed during the markup of the NDAA, aims to automate draft registration for all draft-aged male U.S. residents and expand registration to include women.
The proposed system of automatic draft registration, based on data from other federal databases, would replace the current system in place since 1980, where young men decide whether to sign up for the draft. The existing voluntary registration system has led to widespread non-compliance, rendering the Selective Service database ineffective for a potential draft.
This automatic draft registration initiative was prompted by the Selective Service System as part of its annual budget request to Congress. The proposal was introduced in the House Armed Services Committee by Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) and received strong endorsement from Committee Chair Mike Rogers (R-AL). The full committee approved the amendment by voice vote without audible opposition.
Rep. Houlahan has been a prominent advocate for including women in draft registration in previous years. However, her latest proposal focuses solely on the automatic registration of men, reflecting a commitment to strengthening the nation’s military preparedness over advancing gender equality in draft requirements.
The amendment’s approval marks a significant step towards expanding the draft pool, potentially increasing the number of individuals available for conscription in the event of a major military conflict. The proposed changes underscore ongoing efforts to adapt the Selective Service System to meet contemporary defense needs and ensure readiness for future contingencies.
Only making the draft mandatory fir males only and not females is not an equal rights situation. If woman demand equality then they have to give equality. So the bill shouldn’t be written as males only .
When they begin drafting women for a potential shooting war we will have a population boom due to draft age gals deciding they’d rather rather be pregnant.
Not just an observation, it’s a fact….
Just curious, Gunny – when was the last time women in this country were getting pregnant en masse so they wouldn’t get drafted to participate in a shooting war?
My aunt enlisted in WWII to do her part in the war effort, along with all her brothers, one of whom was a Marine.
And how do you account for all those BAM’s?
Paul, my friend, I have known quite a number of Broad Ass Marines and all were squared away. The WWII Rosie Riveters, pilots, Nurses and others all dialed in. This has no connection to them. None
Reread what I said.
“DRAFT & DRAFT AVOIDANCE”
Nothing more.
Think back to all of the wanged out things GUYS did to avoid the draft. Some, weird desperate stuff.
And now, in the snowflake era, do you think that no one would actually come up with the bright idea of a roll in the hay, or two, to avoid ………
anyway you catch my drift I’m sure.
I believe we’re on the same page…
