VIMS — Scientists at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science are monitoring a harmful algal bloom (HAB) developing in the York River and parts of the lower Chesapeake Bay.
Harmful algal blooms occur when certain microscopic algae grow rapidly and accumulate in the water. While many algal blooms are harmless, some species can produce toxins or create conditions that stress fish, shellfish and other marine life. Because you can’t determine whether a bloom is harmful just by looking at it, scientists collect water samples to identify the species present.
Recent samples show a mixed bloom that includes Margalefidinium polykrikoides (Marg), Akashiwo sanguinea, Scrippsiella trochoidea and Levanderina fissa. Of these, Margalefidinium polykrikoides is a species that has historically been a HAB of concern to aquatic organismsin this region. This is not typically a HAB of concern for human health. Our scientists are closely monitoring how the bloom develops over the coming days.
What should you look for?
• Water that appears reddish-brown, rusty, green or otherwise discolored
• Streaks or patches on the water’s surface
• Unusual foam or scum
• Dead or distressed fish nearby
Keep in mind that not every bloom is harmful, and not every harmful bloom is visible. These signs don’t confirm a HAB, but they can indicate conditions worth reporting so scientists can investigate.
