Belle Haven, Va. September 13, 2016 – Virginia Eastern Shore Land Trust (VES Land Trust) helped permanently preserve 50 acres on Nandua Creek, including 35 acres of shrubs and grasses managed for wildlife habitat, with a conservation easement. This newest conservation easement reflects the landowner’s desire to preserve habitat for birds and other wildlife while allowing for single-family residential use of the property. Landowner and easement donor, Mr. Kent McNew, said, “I wanted to conserve as much of the beauty and sense of place for future generations to enjoy as I have been able to.”
Land conservation is an integral part of a balanced community and future land use strategy. While development is important and appropriate in certain areas of a community, it’s important to public health to maintain natural areas that improve air quality and filter drinking water, working waters and recreational waters. Pear Tree Point is part of the Nandua Creek Conservation Cooridor, which covers nearly 2,000 acres along Nandua Creek. Maintaining this tract as a natural area helps promote clean air and water on the Eastern Shore. It also provides critical habitat for local wildlife and migrating birds.
About the Virginia Eastern Shore Land Trust
VES Land Trust works closely with landowners to protect the quality of the Eastern Shore’s waterways for aquaculture and recreation, to ensure farmland remains available for production, and to steward forestland and grassland for wildlife habitat. VES Land Trust uses conservation easements, a voluntary deeded agreement, to offer permanent protection while respecting private property rights. Conservation easements reflect the unique property they protect and the intentions of the donor.
