Walmart is partnering with OpenAI to turn shopping into a conversation — allowing customers to plan meals, restock essentials, and even check out directly through ChatGPT.
The collaboration marks a major leap toward what experts are calling “agentic commerce” — a future where artificial intelligence doesn’t just answer shoppers’ questions but anticipates their needs.
Walmart announced that it is moving away from traditional search bars and toward more interactive, multimedia-driven shopping experiences powered by OpenAI’s technology and the retailer’s own in-house systems.
Customers will be able to interact with ChatGPT using simple prompts such as “plan a weeknight taco dinner” or “reorder my staples.” The AI will then curate a list of recommended items, allowing users to complete checkout in a single step.
“The native AI experience coming is multimedia, personalized, and contextual,” Walmart president and CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement.
The initiative builds on Walmart’s growing investment in artificial intelligence across its operations. The company has already introduced generative AI-powered search functions, automated product replenishment systems, and tools to accelerate fashion trend production. Meanwhile, Walmart-owned Sam’s Club is using AI to streamline checkout lines and verify receipts at exits.
The retail giant says the new ChatGPT-powered shopping experience, complete with instant checkout, will be available “soon.”
With this latest move, Walmart is positioning itself at the forefront of the AI-driven retail revolution — one where shopping may soon feel more like a conversation than a transaction.
