Gov. Ralph Northam said in a virtual town hall this week that he really doesn’t know if beaches will be open by the 4th of July. Northam said that large congregations of beach goers would be a concern.
Will customers be asking for their money back amid signs that this summer the beach will not open?
The pandemic threatens to slam our local economy in ways previously unthinkable. As of now, the town is following the Governor’s lead– the message is, stay home and stay “safe”.
The time leading up to Memorial Day usually gives restaurants an early push as locals, and visitors emerge from winter. Not this spring, which is going to force most to reopen with massive debt with vendors, rents, mortgagors, insurance, utilities, and eventually taxes.
Even if the beach is open by late July, it will pretty much too late for Cape Charles to recover.

This is getting ridiculous! Give the restaurants reduced capacity, so ” social distancing” can be employed, have servers wear masks, and whatever other strictures the media will endorse…but we have to get open SOON! As an industry we do not make money selling food, we need to sell alcohol. Losing May will be crushing, losing June will put the bulk of us here on The Shore out of business! We have 4 months to make optimum profit, September 1 the door is closing quickly!
We have been here working diligently for almost 14 years and would like to be here for a few more! If you feel uncomfortable going out in public….stay home! If you are comfortable interacting with some new separation and medical restrictions we would welcome you! We need to get back to work….as soon as prudently possible!
